IT Director - Application Development - UnitedHealth Group - Minnesota


Job description
We are seeking a Director of Application Development to lead a large development organization focused on delivery of Cloud-based Provider solutions. The ideal candidate has managed teams of 25 or more development resources in a global onshore/offshore model. They must have extensive IT management, development and leadership experience, having a broad background, understanding and experience with various technologies.


Position Responsibilities

A Director of Application Development is primarily responsible for delivering solutions that meet the needs of our business with speed, accuracy and quality.
Active and visible leader. This is a “Lead from the front” type of position where credibility and authority come more from doing than from title or reporting structure.
Proactively removes issues and roadblocks that may otherwise prevent our development teams from successful delivery.
Results-focused individual with strong coaching, decision making, influencing, negotiation, problem solving and situational analysis skills
Ensures that our development teams comply with all technical procedures, quality controls, corporate policies and regulatory controls.
Communicates effectively with our Business and Technology partners.
Recruits, hires, leads, motivates and coaches staff to continually improve our team performance.
Accountable for planning and monitoring the financial performance of our team.
Review technical architecture of new and ongoing projects to ensure long term simplicity, scalability, maintainability, security, and reliability.
Help business owners reconcile business value with technical costs and complexity by refining/negotiating requirements.
Be the internal sponsor/stakeholder of projects and features that will decrease technical debt in our feature prioritization process.
Work with technical operations and support teams to increase stability and reliability of the deployment environments.
Monitor emerging trends in technology to maintain competitive advantage.
Be a role model for software engineers (and mentor for junior engineers) throughout the organization by advocating for sublime architecture, advanced Agile best practices, and a “no short cuts” mentality.

Requirements

Undergraduate degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience
10 or more years of software development experience
5 or more years of IT staff management experience - staff size of 25 or greater
3 or more years working with offshore development teams
3 more years experience in a development role (web development, Java Development).
3 or more years coaching, mentoring staff through conflict resolution

Assets

Healthcare experience
Previous Director-level experience/responsibilities for a large company
Broad knowledge of development technologies such as Java-based web applications, Pega-based workflow applications, web services (REST and SOAP), relational databases, content management are preferred
