Job description
Director of User Experience (UX)

The Director of User Experience (UX) will provide leadership within the UX department and represent the department professionally internally and externally.  Ensure that the complex products we create (mostly digital but also mobile, retail, etc.) are useful, relevant and engaging to the intended user.

I. Knowledge Foundation & Understanding
Provides oversight as part a team with Planning and/or Business Analysis. This may include planning, executing and analyzing using various primary and secondary research such as one-on-one interviews, contextual inquiry, task analysis, surveys, online focus groups, and business stakeholder interviews.
Directs others in data extraction and analysis of complex data sets using affinity diagramming, frameworks or other methods, with assistance
Deconstructs, analyzes and reinterprets complex and abstract information, or directs other in doing so.
Develops process models, user personas and scenarios, reports, experience models and other types of frameworks and models, or directs/mentors others in doing so.
II. Solution Modeling / Interaction Design (Core Skills)
Collaborates directly with visual design and writing teams to develop concepts. UX Directors need to show leadership and be proactive in finding teams and participating in these concepting sessions.
Defines, prioritizes and drives consensus on features, functions and content
Develops and reviews solution models—including information architectures, taxonomies, wireframes and interaction models—that support user tasks and goals, or directs/mentors others
Evangelizes user-centered solutions throughout the concepting and design process, and through to the build and testing
Identifies problems and risks and brings creative solutions/options to address them
Strong understanding and application of the uses, implications and opportunities of social media and networks; makes human-centered recommendations
III.  Evaluating & Measuring
Develops or directs others in visual design, heuristic and competitive reviews
Develops or directs others in usability testing planning, facilitation and analysis
Develops or directs others in producing usability testing hi-and low-fidelity prototypes
Participates in defining tactical and strategic measurement
IV. Teamwork & Management
Demonstrates ownership and enthusiasm for work; maintains a line of sight to projects for his/her account
Participates as a lead-team member for his/her client, planning account activities with other directors
Remains sensitive to and skilled at delivering work on-time and on-budget; keeps PM informed; anticipates potential budget issues in advance and helps revise project the approach; helps other UX in keeping projects on-time and on-budget
Maintains consistency and ensuring quality of solutions within the assigned account
Leads and directs UX-only projects
Proactively collaborates and communicates with team members
Directs others in planning, facilitating, and analyzing work sessions
Is aware of project opportunities within a client organization and works with Account Managers to sell-in additional work, such as usability testing or research phases as needs arise within a project.
V.   Client Relations
High degree of comfort and ability in both formal presentations and informal meetings/discussions with clients.
Produces and directs others to produce “recipient friendly” deliverables at the appropriate level of fidelity, detail and expertise required to effectively communicate to clients
Organizes and leads immersive client work sessions, brainstorming, or presentations
Inspires a human-centered (HumanKind) worldview within clients, demonstrating the benefits of an UX-led process as appropriate given context of client communications
VI.  UX Department/Internal Issues
Demonstrates sensitivity to remaining 85% billable
Maintains a positive attitude and fosters teamwork and collaboration with group peers within the Arc/Leo Burnett organization.
Initiates and directs internal UX Intellectual Property (IP) activities, such as posting to the blog, bringing new technologies or processes to the team, and sharing work.
Directly manages other full-time UX and provides guidance on professional development, conducts performance reviews; may also include subcontractors

VII. New Business – Internal & External to Network
Is the primary UX on large-scale new business efforts
Estimates time and effort for new business activities
Clearly communicates the role and value of UX within Arc and Leo Burnett as well as across the Publicis Network in the context of new business
Desired Skills and Experience
5-8+ years experience in applying iterative, user-centered design principles to the design and development of digital solutions
Management/mentorship of junior practitioners
Background in direct-to-consumer/user projects and/or brand marketing and/or agency
Expertise with modeling and prototyping tools such as Axure, Omnigraffle, InDesign, Illustrator, Fireworks, HTML/JavaScript,
Outstanding written and oral communications and presentation skills
Experience as a senior-level User Experience Designer or Director on large projects
Solid interpersonal and teamwork abilities and proven leadership
Education
Bachelor’s degree
Graduate degree (preferred) in Psychology, Anthropology, Sociology, Human Factors, HCI, Design, Design Planning, Anthropology, or related field
