Director - Production Operations - Public Broadcasting Service - Arlington


Job description
JOB OBJECTIVE:

The Director, Production Operations is responsible for building and overseeing the operational functions of the Production unit in PBS’ in-house Creative Resources Agency, as well as producing select projects. In partnership with the Director of Production, the Director of Production Operations ensures the delivery of all creative assets are produced on-brief, on-time, on-budget, in support of overall department goal of increasing ratings, relevance, resonance and loyalty for the PBS family of brands (PBS, PBS KIDS) through the effective development and execution of internal clients’ strategies. He/she identifies and implements innovative approaches to production and project management to foster a culture of innovation among the production team, clients, partners, PBS and member stations at large.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Develop, implement and improve production processes.
Oversee and manage all Production operations including: production workflow, metrics/analytics, asset management/stewardship, tools, team training and process;
Oversee, rethink and continuously refine the production process of creative materials on-air and off, digital, in print, on screen and on radio, out-of-home, at events and in social media.
Seek fiscal and workload efficiencies throughout the process of creation, production and delivery of assets;
Hone strategies to evolve business unit practices to deliver on growing demands with limited resources;
Serve as key business unit liaison with Finance department in developing and stewarding significant (including 6-figure) budgets;
Liase with, manage and integrate (as needed) contracts with external vendors and partners, talent, and agencies to ensure compelling campaigns emerge on time, on budget and on brief.
Serve as global oversight of all Production unit budgets, contracts, and rights negotiations as well as strategic lead for budgetary planning;
Supervise select staff and freelancers’ work and workflow of the production area.
Assign and delegate projects and provide project management guidance and direction to select production staff.
Work closely with clients (strategists and internal business units) and creative directors before, during and after the production cycle.
Lead and act as equal partner to Director, Production, creative services and strategy.
Produce select high-level creative projects. Duties include creating and managing project timelines, schedules, and detailed project budgets; negotiating agreements with talent, and vendors.
Foster and foment goodwill and improved morale throughout the department.
Other duties as assigned.

Desired Skills and Experience
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
7+ years’ experience in a production environment, with an emphasis on project and staff management and including experience in the technical aspects of producing, directing, and editing.
Proven experience in managing multi-platform production projects
Demonstrated understanding of broadcast, digital, print and out of home production processes and creation and delivery of social media video assets.
Background in TV production, with at least 3 years of on-air promotion experience.
Direct client service experience, as well as experience with creative workflow management tools/software solutions and digital asset management.
Experience hiring and successfully managing production staff and freelancers.
MINIMUM EDUCATION/TRAINING REQUIRED:
Bachelor's degree or higher in Communications, Media, Television, Business or Liberal Arts, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

SKILLS/ABILITIES REQUIRED:
A strong team player, partner and leader.
In-depth knowledge of broadcast, digital video and editing techniques, graphics and effects, animation.
In-depth knowledge and understanding of print and online production process.
Proven track record of developing and managing teams, workflow, production schedules and project and departmental budgets.
Strong contract and budget negotiation skills.
Demonstrated ability to prioritize, delegate and manage many projects simultaneously.
Industry trend-spotter and trendsetter.
Well-connected networker. Strong knowledge of and existing relationships with video, print and online production vendors and agencies.
Works well with others. Proven ability to work with creative and strategy individuals and teams. Proven ability to partner with colleagues, develop and meet team goals and delegate work to team members.
Ability to lead Producers and Production Assistants, while producing key projects.
Excellent oral and written communication skills;
Detail-oriented with superior organizational skills.
Ability and willingness to learn new technology as needs arise
