Director - New Technology Initiatives - Sony Music Entertainment - Los Angeles


Job description
The Director, New Technology Initiatives will play a key role within the Sony Music Entertainment Global Digital Business (GDB) and the external tech community by interfacing with developers, entrepreneurs, industry organizations and investors to create partnerships and help enable innovative digital music products and initiatives to come to market. Working closely with key stakeholders across Sony Music, the position will identify needs across the organization and then pair up external technologies and partnerships to launch initiatives to fulfill those needs. Additionally the position will focus on reviewing technical requirements of existing partners, participate in standards bodies such as
High-Res Audio and Connected Media Experience (CME) and future groups and organizations designed to advance new technologies across the music industry. Additionally, the role will maintain a strong presence at industry events, hackathons and developer community programs to be the primary resource that bridges third party developers with all divisions inside of Sony Music. The role will be both inward and outward facing as a respected thought leader that stays ahead of the curve as it relates to new technology trends. Where applicable, the role will also lead project management of new tools and platforms that may be built internally to increase efficiency. This is a global role covering all platforms, with an initial focus on smart phone platforms.
1) Execute and participate in developer community outreach programs and events to enable and encourage third parties to build compelling digital products that utilize music
2) Lead technical design and project management of internal tools and platforms that act as innovation enablers for third parties
3) Act as SME's primary technical reviewer and ensure compliance of features and requirements offered by third party services
4) Act as primary day to day contact with industry organizations, standards bodies and consortiums related to digital initiatives and technology innovation
5) Identify technology partnership opportunities and goals with third parties for the purpose of identifying and executing new initiatives
6) Evaluate new products, companies and technologies in market and advise executive management on strategic courses of action for SME to maximize value
7) Maintain communication and understanding of label priorities, and, when applicable, connect innovative companies with individual label teams
8) Build credibility and trust with the developer community and champion their efforts in market
9) Participate in conferences, panel discussions and investment events to be an industry resource and leader
10) Interface with Sony Corporate to identify cross company synergies (E.G. Sony Pictures, Sony Mobile, Sony PlayStation)

Desired Skills and Experience
• 7+ years of experience in digital product development and building multi-platform applications
• Strong technical knowledge with demonstrated experience in computer programming and technical architecture
• A flexible, adaptable and patient personality
• A self starter with a team first mindset
• Expert level ability to create and deliver presentations and ROI analysis
• Strong experience working collaboratively in cross-functional teams
• Strong rolodex of respected contacts in developer community and with Tier 1 technology organizations
• Exceptional written and verbal skills and ability to interface with a broad range of people internally and externally
• A passion for the music industry and digital product innovation
• A technologist and strategist who can understand the big picture and execute appropriately
• Ability to capture and interpret analytics and user data to continuously enhance products
• Ability to budget and forecast to maximize ROI
• Ability to plan and organize developer events and outreach programs
• Ability to create and articulately deliver expert level presentations in a senior executive environment
• Ability to monitor and adapt to rapidly changing market dynamics

• Understanding of the intricacies of music rights, publishing, etc. a strong plus
