Sr. Director - Commercial Controller - Biogen Idec - Cambridge


Job description
Reporting to the Chief Accounting Officer, the Commercial Controller (CC) will serve as a key financial advisor to management on all matters related to accounting, control and reporting for the company’s gross to net revenue activity globally, working closely with the Corporate Controller, affiliate finance heads and US and International Revenue Directors. S/He will oversee a team that is directly responsible for all aspects of revenue accounting operations including maintenance and enforcement of corporate accounting policies and procedures in accordance with GAAP and SEC requirements, ensuring the integrity of the company's financial data, reporting and disclosure. The CC will ensure appropriate revenue accounting and instill strong internal controls across the organization and provide support to operational finance leadership across the company.

Primary responsibilities include:

• Maintaining the effectiveness and adequacy of policies, procedures and controls governing the company’s gross to net revenue operations including the creation of new/improved mechanisms, policies and procedures when necessary.

• Ensuring that internal and external accounting and reporting of gross to net revenue is in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and that the company is in compliance with all regulatory (SEC and other) reporting requirements.

• Influencing the timely and accurate preparation of financial reports and analysis which provide commercial and corporate management with pertinent information on the operating results of the business units.

• Assist with forecasting and budgeting of revenue and serve clients across Global Commercial Operations (GCO).

• Engage, oversee and direct members of affiliate finance as they identify and resolve local accounting and reporting issues related to revenue recognition and all elements of gross to net revenue accounting and related reserves.

• Conduct and oversee research of technical accounting issues and make recommendations to the CAO with respect to accounting decisions, and Commercial management with respect to the impact of accounting outcomes of business plans and initiatives. Also, monitor, understand and communicate pending FASB proposals, their timing and potential effects.

• Serve as a principal interface with the independent public accountants (PWC) for the planning, coordination and conduct of their annual audit in the area of affiliate finance and gross to net revenue including direct or indirect preparation of complete and accurate memoranda summarizing accounting judgments and conclusions.

• Present to senior management and, as applicable, the Audit Committee of the Board of Directors on topics of special interest.

• Develop future financial talent through training and mentoring of individuals, as well as staffing and recruiting of necessary skill sets.

• Consult on accounting impact of proposed transactions and advise operating executives on alternative deal structures.

• Understand the elements of U.S. government pricing, discounts and reporting, as well as best practices and information systems employed to comply with these requirements.

Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess a history of strong performance and sound career decision-making. Extensive experience identifying and effectively resolving routine and complex financial and accounting issues across a broad spectrum of topics, with particular emphasis on commercial arrangement globally is needed, including direct experience with public reimbursements systems and indirect sales channels including agents, distributors and 3rd party logistics providers. She/he will be able to quickly grasp company operations and business drivers, and will possess a high degree of integrity and independence with at least 15-20 years’ experience in dealing with complex accounting matters.

The ideal candidate must possess accomplishments that demonstrate the characteristics of tenacity, self-confidence and the proven ability to think strategically and operationally to effectively guide a growing global business. She/he must feel comfortable working in, as well as embracing, an environment that is changing and challenging. International experience and oversight of affiliate finance operations is strongly desirable.

The individual will be able to demonstrate proven success as a strong leader in advising top management on issues relating to financial reporting, accounting, internal control and financial analysis. She/he should possess excellent management and matrix leadership skills with the ability to provide clear direction to the department while also functioning as an individual contributor.

The candidate must have a significant technical accounting background with a minimum of 8 years’ experience in public accounting (Big 4) and possess a CPA designation. Big 4 experience has ideally been supplemented by more recent experience in a dynamic successful global company

She/he must be highly skilled in working with a multitude of information technology systems and can anticipate business needs and lead in the development and execution of new systems and processes within the finance and accounting organization.

Education

An undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline and CPA are required. An MBA or other graduate degree would be desirable.
