Job description
The Director of Visual Merchandising creates Visual direction, standards and processes that tell clearly defined merchandise stories and are easy-to-shop for customers. The Director of Visual Merchandising helps to maximize sales/square foot by creating merchandise presentations which encourage customer purchases while utilizing space in an efficient manner.

The Director of Visual Merchandising manages the process of planning and communicating Visual Merchandising standards for seasonal assortments that show products in their best light. Presentation concepts and techniques must be simple and efficient to execute consistently. Visual Merchandising must maximize the potential of product to sell at full price or during promotional events.

Essential Job Functions/ Responsibilities:
Coordinate and prioritize work flow for the department to achieve goals within budgets and timelines.
Develop annual budgets; manage activity and periodic adjustments.
Recruit, hire, train, develop, manage and evaluate performance of department associates. Provide appropriate performance feedback.
Gains understanding of strategic goals, objectives and focus for department from officers/directors and communicate them to department associates.
Participate in and manage design of merchandise presentation “story” techniques with internal/outside resources, merchants, department associates.
Develop floor and fixture plans for specific projects. Contribute to the store design process. Coordinate fixture design and sourcing activity.
Obtain officer approval for merchandising concepts, project floor plans and seasonal floor sets.
Continually improve Visual Merchandising by addressing opportunities and challenges identified by Stores, Marketing and Merchandising.
Assist with field execution and training for new stores.

Desired Skills and Experience
Previous Work Experience:
Professional experience in visual merchandising management. Other relevant retail management experience considered.

Education:
College degree or commensurate retail merchandising experience.

Demonstrated ability to develop staff and manage their performance. Able to work effectively across departmental lines. Build and maintain lasting relationships between merchandise, vendors, store associates and others. Display diplomacy under pressure. Effectively present ideas in verbal and written form. Able to link creative ideas to practical, achievable solutions. Analyze business data and combine with subjective impressions and perceptions. Maintain a balanced perspective in rapidly changing circumstances. Approach problems in a solution-oriented manner. Demonstrate a proven ability to set performance goals and manage multiple processes for successful goal attainment. Accept responsibility for work processes and outcomes. Organize work effectively through good time management skills. Remain flexible in rapidly changing business conditions. Excellent stress management skills. Consistent sense of urgency to complete assignments of the department on time for seasonal store execution or other deadlines.

Computer Skills and Software:
Proficient with Windows, Microsoft Office, AutoCad (or comparable CAD program)
