Job description
The Global M&A and Business Development team leads M&A, strategic investments and partnerships for eBay Marketplaces, globally.
The main objective of the team is to ensure that eBay Inc.'s strong balance sheet is put most effectively to use in support of eBay Marketplace growth priorities.
The responsibilities of M&A and Business Development team include
Prioritizing M&A and BD opportunities to accelerate the delivery of our strategic priorities
Working closely with the eBay Marketplaces President, CFO, CTO and operational leaders to enable go/no-go decision-making for potential investments and acquisitions
Building unique market insights and strong industry/ venture capital relationships to proactively identify the most attractive M&A and investment opportunities
Leading commercial diligence for potential acquisitions and investments: ensuring strong strategic fit, assessing rationale for buying vs. building or partnering, estimating key synergies and conducting initial post-merger integration planning, consistent with our strategic intent
Executing on commercial deals when Marketplaces decides to partner vs. buy and to run pilots to prove out M&A cases
Developing a world-class M&A and BD organization and operational muscle that continuous to play a critical role in helping Marketplace exceed its growth aspirations.
The M&A and Business Development team works in close partnership with the Marketplaces leadership team, while developing close working relationships with the business operators. It also works hand in hand with the eBay Inc. Corporate Development team. The M&A and Business Development team reports to the VP of M&A and Business Development, who is a member of the Marketplaces executive team.
We are currently seeking a high calibre Director to join our team. The Director will report to the VP of M&A and Business Development. This is a high profile and challenging role with significant executive exposure inside and outside of the eBay, at a global level. The Director is expected to bring significant expertise to the role allowing him/ her to play a leading role across all the team responsibilities listed above. The role requires a blend of strong strategic problem-solving, management and/or deal experience, and team-building skills, in a highly dynamic business environment.
This role provides a unique opportunity to gain a deep understanding of eBay, our industry and to lead transactions ranging from BD, to early stage investments, smaller tech and talent deals to large scale M&A. The level of exposure will allow the Director to develop close working relationships with the key leaders at and beyond eBay, and can be an effective springboard for other operational leadership roles at eBay, where global job mobility is encouraged.
Informing our M&A strategy across key strategic themes
Playing a leadership role in improving our deal sourcing abilities incl. interaction with early stage companies
Support delivery of business and corporate development insights and recommendations to senior executives around strategic partnership and M&A opportunities
Acting as senior deal captain on specific deal situations - including deal identification, business case development, project management, target engagement, interfacing with internal and external topical experts and business owners, coordination of post-merger planning, communication of key insights and recommendations.
Developing strong working relationships with key decision makers and functional groups across the eBay Inc. organization.
Recommending and deploying best M&A and BD practices, helping build and develop world class team, and mentoring junior team members
Exhibiting strong multi-tasking skills managing multiple corporate development projects at a time in a fast-paced, results-oriented environment
Strong team-player
Some travel is required (1-2 trips per quarter)
MBA from a top-tier institution
10+ years of career experience, including 5+ post-MBA
Top-tier strategy consulting firm, investment banking, private equity (tech focus preferred)
Familiarity with eCommerce, consumer internet and/or consumer retail
Experience with corporate M&A or alliances
Strong and consistent track record of academic and professional accomplishments
Proactive "can do" attitude, strong team-player
Strong communicator
Passion for (e)commerce, consumer internet, and serving the unique community of eBay
