Director - Food Safety - WhiteWave Foods - Broomfield


Job description
POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Director of Food Safety establishes and delivers all food safety strategies across a $2B enterprise comprised of numerous category leading brands, five (5) company-owned manufacturing facilities, and approximately fifty (50) co-manufacturing facilities. As a member of the Corporate Quality Leadership Team, the Director will lead several functions including Food Safety, Laboratory Operations, and assure compliance to the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA).

The Director will partner closely across the Supply Chain and Research & Development organizations and with other members of the Corporate Quality Leadership Team including the Director of Quality Assurance, Director of Technical Services, and Sr. Manager of Compliance in order to develop appropriate strategies and objectives that drive continuous improvement and regulatory compliance. The Director will then lead the implementation of these strategies in order to achieve, maintain, and improve food safety programs and performance.

In addition, the Director will lead a state of the art corporate laboratory and all WhiteWave Foods facility laboratory operations in order to deliver performance excellence. Research, new method validation, and ongoing compliance to ISO/IEC 17025 A2LA are also responsibilities of the Director.

The Director of Food Safety will also serve on the corporate crisis management team.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Lead the Food Safety effort to include developing strategies, objectives, and priorities. Publish and deliver annual operating plans and strategic plans.
Ensure tight linkage to higher-level Supply Chain and enterprise-wide priorities.
Ensure food safety needs are built into key cross functional processes from concept through commercialization.
Lead laboratory operations across the enterprise to assure performance excellence, new method identification and implementation, standardization and ongoing ISO accreditation.
Prepare the organization for heightened regulatory expectations by developing enhanced quality and food safety programs across the supply chain.
Identify areas of opportunity and develop, simplify, and optimize quality and food safety programs across the enterprise.
Leverage continuous improvement tools and industry best practices to improve quality and food safety processes and alignment across the enterprise.
Represent Food Safety to all business teams and serve as a conduit for information. Improve visibility to performance and business team needs.
Transform data into meaningful information by developing new metrics and define activities that will drive improvement.
Interact effectively at all levels within the organization, influence key stakeholders, and constructively manage opposition.
Provide thought leadership within the broader organization.


ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Laboratory Related
Troubleshoots microbiological challenges and provide effective solutions
Principle Investigator for all microbiology and chemistry research
Serves as the technical resource for food science and microbiology challenges
Promotes positive change (continuous improvement) in the facility and corporate laboratories
Promotes laboratory standardization across the network
Focuses on continuous improvement in testing accuracy and precision
Oversees that new testing methodologies are effectively rolled out to the facilities
Oversees the development and review of sampling/testing standardization policy that is current and up to date with novel technologies
Optimizes the laboratory organization (build bench strength)
Streamlines the facility laboratory process
Prepares for and assist with LIMs-SPC implementation in the facilities
Troubleshoots facility testing challenges
Oversees proper laboratory training to the facilities
Oversees all laboratory operations and projects, and ensures standardization, accuracy, and precision, laboratory test results, and ensures compliance to ISO/IEC 17025 A2LA. ISO 17025 is for the Corporate Lab only.
Assists with programs to increase accuracy and/or precision of facility testing

Other
Works closely with cross functional teams to ensure the programs are efficient and appropriate for quality and food safety
Assists with specifications in regards to food safety and quality
Assists R&D with projects in relation to food safety
Assists with the HACCP programs
Ensures Operations and QA has all the reporting tools necessary to make educated decisions
Acts as the consultant for food safety programs, research, sanitation practices, and regulatory compliance.
Assists with crisis management and disposition
5-25% travel

Desired Skills and Experience
PREFERRED CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience
Must have at least 10 years of previous QA manufacturing, food safety, and laboratory experience, with a minimum of a M.S. degree in Food Microbiology or Food Science, or other related fields.
2. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Excellent communication skills
Great organization, Multi-tasking, Great customer service and coaching abilities, Team oriented, Motivator, Detail oriented, effective time management
Extensive experience in a food/beverage manufacturing and laboratory environment, HACCP, and food safety practices
Ability to perform complex statistical data analysis is a must utilizing statistical process control (InfinityQS) or other software
Should be familiar with Foss equipment (IR, FT120), chemistry (HPLC, GC, wet chemistry), and rapid microbiology techniques (ATP, PCR, ELISA, Flow Cytometry)
Must be really familiar with GLPs/GMPs, Laboratory Safety, and a Laboratory Chemical Hygiene Plan
Good writing skills
Ability to meet short deadlines
Familiar with ISO 17025 (A2LA)
Nonessential Qualifications
Ph.D. in Food Science or Food Microbiology is preferred
Experience with dairy, soy, plant based nutrition, cereals, grains, and baking a plus

Materials and Equipment Directly Used:
Office machinery including: computers, printers, fax machines, copiers, telephones, etc.
Software including: Microsoft Office, Lotus Notes, Excel, JMP or MiniTab, Word, LIMs/SPC, and PowerPoint
