Job Description
Organizational Relationship
The Associate Director is a member of the University Housing Executive management team and reports to the Director of University Housing, who reports to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs.
The Associate Director supervises the Assistant Director of Employee Services and the Assistant Director of Financial Services andindirectly supervises the staff that report to these Assistant Directors.
Job Summary
The Associate Director of Housing for Business Services will assume a strategic role in the overall financial and human resources management of University Housing. As a key member of the Housing Executive Team, the Associate Director of Housing for Business Services is responsible for leading, planning, managing and directing the business operations of University Housing including the Financial Services and Employee Services units. University Housing consists of university-owned and operated undergraduate, graduate, family and apartment housing, and employs over 600 full-time staff and 1000 student employees. There is an operating budget of $100 million. University Housing is a self-supporting auxiliary enterprise.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities
Specific duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Supervise and develop the direct management reports for the Financial Services and Employee Services Units. Direct the coordination of staff activities in the following areas: Accounting, Human Resources, and Payroll. Work closely with the Sr. Assistant Director of Technology Services to develop tools and systems that provide critical financial and operational information for University Housing.
Directly advises the Director of University Housing concerning:
All financial matters
Preparation of annual $100 million budget
Budget and operating guidelines
Preparation and analysis of monthly financial statements
Approval and processing of financial documents and contracts
Establishment and implementation of fiscal and business policy and procedures within the University guidelines
Annual rate proposals
Development of long-range financial plans for division
Campus and internal auditing
All human resources operations
Different employee groups and their unique personnel issues, including grievances
Hiring and training
Payroll operations
Long-range employment planning and departmental succession planning
Development for the continuous evaluation of short and long-term strategic financial objectives.
Credibility of Finance group by providing timely and accurate analysis of budgets, financial trends and forecasts
Impact of long-range planning, introduction of new programs/strategies
The establishment and maintenance of strong relationships with the Housing Executive Team so as to identify their needs and seek a full range of business solutions.
The financial implications of business activities
Recommendations to strategically enhance financial performance and opportunities.
Become an active contributor within University Housing:
Attend meetings
Participate in committees
Contribute to the development of the strategic plan
Communicate financial and human resource policies
Represent the department to campus and community
Negotiate business contracts with outside vendors
Act as financial liaison within the University and with other universities
Work with University Housing parking liaison to coordinate department parking with Campus Parking Services

Role Proficiency
The Associate Director of Housing for Business Services acts asthe chief financial officer and chief human resources officer and isresponsible for all financial and human resource operations of University Housing. These services include: budget planning and analysis; forecasting; ratedevelopment and analysis; strategic planning; contract development andnegotiations; financial reporting; auditing; purchasing; human resources andemployment services; payroll; parking liaison; financial and human resourcepolicy and procedures.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, Human Resources or other related field is required. A Master’s Degree in the same or related area or a Certified Public Accountant is preferred. SPHR is also preferred.
Ten or more years of senior-level experience in management; including areas of accounting, budgeting and human resources is required, with a minimum of five years of responsibility in each area. A significant level of authority and responsibility in a college-housing program at a major residential university is preferred.
A demonstrated ability to interact positively with people and promote acooperative and efficient work environment is required, as well as excellent written and oral communication skills. An understanding of college housing programs within a major residential university is preferred.
Strong problem solving and creative skills and the ability to exercise sound judgment and make decisions based on accurate and timely analyses.
Experience developing tools and systems that provide critical financial and operational information is strongly preferred.
High level of integrity and dependability with a strong sense of urgency and results-orientation.
