Nike is seeking a Asia Pacific, Latin America (APLA) VAT Tax Director (Portland, OR, Singapore, or possibly in Latin America) to take ownership of the VAT advisory, controversy and compliance function in APLA. The candidate will own VAT related matters relating to new business initiatives, systems and transactions, process improvements, and internal controls. This position will work closely with APLA tax team, finance, sourcing, business partners, IT communities and other functional teams as a resource to manage VAT costs and exposures.
Candidate must work closely with members across a global tax department and external stakeholder teams (e.g., Accounting, Legal, Systems) to communicate current and future business plans, obtain cross-functional tax subject matter input, and ensure coordination and execution of cross-functional tax solutions in a sustainable manner. Candidate must be able to communicate, written and verbal, complex tax concepts in ways that are meaningful and useful to non-tax professionals.
Gain a deep understanding of Nike’s business initiatives, models, goals, and drivers, including the technologies and/or intellectual property used to launch business initiatives
Set the proper attitude for risk along with identifying the tools needed
Drive online access to world class VAT information, training, and VAT review, planning and compliance tools (e.g., standardized online VAT risk metrics and analysis, increased automation, online global VAT return process)
Develop standardized method to measure quality of VAT processes
Identify and communicate to the global tax department and APLA leadership team any ongoing or new VAT technical aspects/issues, benefits, and risks
Provide strategic guidance and oversight for contact with VAT inspectors during VAT examinations
Manage VAT compliance and potential reserves
Write technical and non-technical tax research and compliance memos to be used by various business partners throughout the company
Qualifications
Qualified candidates should have relevant tax experience in a corporate environment, public accounting firm or major law firm. The candidate must also have:
10+ years of progressive indirect tax experience with exposure to international or transactional taxes in a Big 4 public accounting firm, major law firm, and/or a multinational corporation.
Digital experience required
VAT compliance background including preparation and review of VAT compliance matters
Experience working with tax engine systems (e.g. SAP/Vertex).
Demonstrated ability to successfully lead complex, milestone driven projects – including the ability to work effectively across cross-functional teams
Demonstrated ability to operate effectively in a matrixed environment.
Detail-oriented individual who takes ownership of projects, is organized, possesses excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, and is able to deliver on tight deadlines.
Highly motivated, hard-working, and able to work in a fast paced, informal, and often ambiguous environment
