Product Director Reader Experience The New York Times New York

The New York Times seeks a passionate, experienced Product Director for its newly formed Reader Utilities team. This group is charged with making the Times an indispensable service for its most loyal readers by building and improving features that drive engagement (e.g. tools, community products).

In this role, you will be responsible for working closely with design to lead the research, discovery, prioritization and roadmap process for a set of features and functionality that drive reader engagement, encourage registration and help our readers get the most out of their Times experience. You will work closely with peers in design, technology, project management and the newsroom to set priorities and ensure a smart, ambitious product vision.
Ideally you demonstrate:

A love of product management and design. You have experience leading cross-functional product teams and can vigilantly prioritize in a rapidly-changing environment. You are versed in the best practices in agile product development.

An ability to problem solve in a highly collaborative culture. You are in your element at the intersection of technology, design and business. You work easily with colleagues to define and implement innovative solutions to complex problems and competing priorities.

A user-first mindset. You understand the importance of user research, data, testing and judgment in the product development process. You help the team evolve and optimize features and functionality by always advocating for what is best for the user. You’ll rely on a healthy balance between data-driven and user-centric design and decision-making.

Responsibilities:

Own the overall product plan and roadmap. Working closely with the SVP of reader experience, create clear annual and quarterly plans, incorporating input from all stakeholders, that depict how the strategy will achieve the group’s goals.

Manage multiple streams of work. This group currently has two teams, with one product manager reporting into the role, but the team and responsibilities could potentially grow based on performance of the initiatives.

Define and put in place metrics and systems to track product performance. Clearly communicate performance and use data to evaluate and prioritize roadmap.

Be the product evangelist. Own all product communication with senior leadership on current insights and emerging trends, as well as championing the vision to the other teams and groups within the company.

Partner with the engineering and design leads to develop feasible solutions to user experience and technical issues as they arise.

Closely partner with business and editorial to ensure all opportunities are being evaluated, tested and executed.

Stay on top of process efficiencies and uncover opportunities to bring external thinking into streamlining strategic and operational development.

Contribute to a culture of collaboration across all disciplines

Qualifications:

4+ years of product management experience

Strong understanding of the business model levers that drive a subscription business

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and in person.

Strong technical background and understanding with an excellent grasp of the engineering challenges and core technologies that drive a media business

Strong knowledge of product and software development techniques and agile methodologies

Experience in developing a web/mobile product and steering software developers and UX/UI designers

Excellent analytical skills with strong user empathy and awareness driven by qualitative research methods
