At Oculus Research, we're developing the future of virtual and augmented reality by bringing together a broad spectrum of expert teams in relevant technologies. We’re seeking an experienced research director to build a team and drive research in a specific area in addition to managing a small but growing research lab. Relevant areas include but are not limited to optics, displays, computer vision, wireless communication, audio, graphics, animation, AI/ML, and user interface.
Develop and lead AR/VR-relevant technology development projects that break new ground and define categories at the intersection of hardware, software, and content consistent with Facebook’s mission.
Day-to-day decision making and leadership for the project including both the science/engineering elements and incubation toward product.
Perform risk mitigation analysis, critical path determination, and change management on projects throughout their life including engineering assessments, design reviews, partner team/project focus, execution, budget, intellectual property management, etc.
Drive partner deliverables.
Leadership and oversight through all phases of the project up to technology transfer to product: identification/quantification/analysis of opportunity, research and incubation, planning of timelines, budget, partners, hiring, project execution, and preparation for productization.
Manage a research lab with multiple active projects in a variety of possible areas, with some of the leads reporting to you and some reporting to remote managers.
Work independently with minimal supervision.
Communicate project objectives and reasoning to broad audiences as a means for managing and driving strategic partner engagement
Minimum Qualifications
Leadership experience driving projects scientifically, from a product deliverable perspective, including managing budgets, contracts, talent, IP, etc.
M.S. or Ph.D. in engineering or scientific discipline or equivalent experience.
5+ years of experience leading teams and/or in scientific/engineering product development.
Experience in leading time bound and multi-partner initiatives.
Experience with diverse performers across multiple disciplines
