As one of the Head of External Communications and Content’s four direct reports globally, this is an essential position for the company. The Director, Digital Communications will drive the communications strategy for ABB’s digital solutions, primarily working hand-in-hand with Guido Jouret, the Chief Digital Officer. The CDO, a direct report to the Chief Executive Officer, is an Internet of Things pioneer and one of the company’s primary spokespeople. The person in this role must have deep business acumen, ideally with experience in a large global enterprise with innovative digital products and services. Moreover, given the external demands for the CDO’s expertise, an ability to construct appropriate executive platforms and messages is essential.
● Develop strategic communications plans and content to advance ABB’s brand identity related to its digital products and solutions in line with ABB’s overall strategy and messaging.
● Communicate a cohesive, compelling story aligned with ABB’s strategy, aimed at broadening awareness of the company’s market leadership and increasing the visibility of its products and services across key stakeholder audiences.
● Drive and manage executive communications and thought leadership opportunities for the Chief Digital Officer, including high-profile media appearances / interviews, speaking engagements and industry forums. Prepare the CDO and other senior leaders for media engagements and represent them during interviews, as appropriate. Oversee the development of speeches, presentations, briefings and talking points, as necessary.
● Identify challenges and emerging issues faced by the organization. Work with the leadership team and staff to recognize internal and external communications opportunities and solutions and define and execute appropriate strategies to support them.
● Consistently deliver ABB’s digital-related messages through aggressive enterprise storytelling in all key earned media channels – print, broadcast and digital – internationally, nationally and regionally. Oversee media strategies, as well as the relationships with key journalists, bloggers and other influencers.
● Work with other communications and content team members using a supportive and collaborative approach to multichannel content creation and delivery.
● Effectively partner with and leverage all internal and external resources, including agency staff.
Requirements:
Basic Qualification
● Bachelor’s degree and 10 years of experience in communications with significant strategic and hands-on media relations experience OR
● Master’s degree and 8 years of experience in communication with significant strategic and hands-on media relations experience
Preferred Qualifications
● Proven ability to lead and plan complex activities including but not limited to synthesizing market/product data from multiple businesses and developing compelling stories that support a company’s key messages and strategy.
● Track record of success in a truly global matrix organization, including a comfort level working in a fast-paced, high-pressure global environment with frequently evolving priorities. Time spent in both the United States and Europe is a plus; intercultural skills are a must.
● Understanding of ABB’s sector and the challenges of positioning a company in a competitive landscape. Experience with digital products and services, most notably software, preferred.
● Superior influencing and negotiation skills with both internal and external contacts, including the ability to lead and work collaboratively with a cross-functional team.
