The UK Head of Retail Credit Underwriting, is responsible for leading and driving the performance of the underwriting teams across the UK RBWM product set (Mortgages, Loans, Credit Cards & Current Accounts) across all brands (HSBC, first direct, M&S and John Lewis Partnership (JLP)).
The growth of personal lending, particularly the UK Mortgage broker channel, is of central importance to the success of the UK2020 plans. UK Retail Credit Underwriting, plays a critical role in the delivery of this strategy.
Drive market leading underwriting standards (processes, policies and practices) that deliver effective, efficient and customer-focused lending decisions
Deliver commercially sustainable outcomes whilst operating within the UK’s stated risk appetite
This is a senior people leadership role that will require positive and engaging leadership of a large team of underwriters, across multiple sites/brands/products.
Personal accountability for translating Retail Credit Underwriting strategy into the delivery of outstanding customer service to all internal and external parties.

Impact on the Business
Direct accountability for ensuring strong and sophisticated Retail Credit Underwriting capabilities, which is essential to support the bank’s strategy to grow the Retail Credit portfolio and ensure the generation of sustainable profitability.
Accountable for driving credit risk mitigation activity through effective implementation and execution of underwriting and credit controls to ensure credit loss projections are not exceeded
Direct and set Retail Credit Underwriting policy and procedure to ensure consistency of standards and delivery of agreed objectives towards managing and mitigating losses on behalf of the bank.

Personal accountability for translating Retail Credit Underwriting strategy into priority actions to ensure the delivery of outstanding customer service to all internal and external parties.
Creates approach to stakeholders– being responsive to the unique and complex needs and behaviors of customers across the region, without exposing the regional Retail Credit Underwriting strategies to fragmentation or reduced effectiveness.
Accountable for building lasting, effective team relationships – within Retail Credit Underwriting, Risk and across all stakeholders.

To continually reassess the operational risks associated with the role and inherent in the business, taking account of changing economic or market conditions, legal and regulatory requirements, operating procedures and practices, management restructurings, and the impact of new technology.

Qualifications
Knowledge & Experience
The jobholder is expected to adopt a flexible approach as required, e.g. in terms of working hours and/or travel to different work locations. The jobholder is not subject to close supervision and will, therefore, be expected to exercise initiative in the effective resolution of escalated quieries and issues and to give direction as appropriate.
Knowledge
Extensive knowledge of Credit Risk Services and the regional marketplace.
Recognized Credit Risk Services Operations subject matter expertise, with demonstrated ability to provide significant insight to related strategies, goals, objectives, and capabilities.
In-depth knowledge of the region’s regulatory environment.
Experience
Extensive Underwriting and Credit Management experience.
Recognized standing in field through personal performance.
Demonstrated strategic ability to use analytic tools and forecasting experience.
Demonstrated ability to manage both remote and large scale operations.
Skills
Proven HSBC Senior Executive leadership capabilities related to Navigating, Aspiring, Driving, Mobilizing, and Sustaining.
Exceptional negotiation skills and ability to effectively communicate at all levels.
