With guidance from Global Health & Medical Affairs (GHMA) leadership, and in coordination with the relevant Global Brand Leaders and US, Regional, and Global Market Leaders, this Medical Director for Merck Vaccines will be directly responsible for accomplishing the following:
- Coordinate, plan, and provide medical and scientific support and guidance on appropriate vaccine-related activities and issues relating to assigned vaccines (licensed and in development) to the relevant US, Regional, and Global Brand Directors and Marketing Directors;

- Represent and serve as a primary liaison for Merck Vaccines with relevant pre-eminent professional, research and academic institutions and forums worldwide;

- Work collaboratively within the adolescent vaccines team (and others, as appropriate) in strategic development and implementation of activities designed to optimize the utilization of vaccines, based upon a firm understanding of scientific, medical, and public-health considerations;

- Contribute to the planning, development and implementation of programs to enhance the public's appreciation and perception of the value of vaccines and increase vaccine utilization.

- Provide medical support to relevant Early Development Teams (EDTs), Product Development Teams (PDTs), and similar teams.
Primary activities include but are not limited to the following:

- Demonstrate and maintain complete and in-depth knowledge of the scientific and technical characteristics of Merck adolescent vaccines currently marketed and in development or planning.

- In collaboration with the appropriate internal stakeholders, relevant Franchise Business Groups, Regional Medical Directors (RMDs), Regional Directors for Medical Affairs (RDMAs), US and Global Brand and Market Leaders (GBLs, MLs), Regional Market Leaders (RMLs), and country level MSD personnel, provide expert guidance and plan, organize, implement, monitor, and evaluate plans for medical/scientific support of Merck Vaccines initiatives.

- Disseminate scientific data on our vaccines in order to improve vaccine utilization and recommendations (e.g., congresses, scientific sessions, medical education, and data publication/review).

- Serve as liaison to vaccine-recommending bodies (e.g., ACIP, ATAGI, NACI) around the world in providing the latest scientific/medical data on our products and developing favorable vaccine recommendations.

- Lead engagement activities with academic institutions, government, research laboratories, scientists and health care practitioners worldwide who conduct vaccine research, teach health professionals and practice in the fields of pediatrics, immunology, infectious disease, epidemiology and vaccinology, sharing new product specific data and developing advocates for immunization and Merck Vaccines.

- Coordinate, support, and direct appropriate internal teams in establishing Advisory Boards and Expert Input Forums {ElF), including identifying Advisory Board and ElF members and chairing the meetings, as appropriate.

- Provide medical/scientific guidance and support to enhance the ability of practitioners to communicate the value of vaccines to the public.

- Serve as Merck Vaccines liaison and collaborator with Merck Research Laboratories, Global Medical Affairs, Office of the Chief Medical Officer, Policy, other Merck departments, and/or our joint venture partners (Sequirus, MCM).

- Support Medical Affairs in planning and implementation of seminars on vaccine research and initiatives and other relevant subjects for Merck Vaccines and other audiences.

- Support other vaccine activities in GHMA as needed

Qualifications

Education:

- Required: MD/ PhD/DO

Required:

- Minimum of 5 years of experience in Public Health or Infectious Diseases with vaccine experience

- Experience interacting with policy making agencies such as CDC, NVPO, USDHHS, and state or national/country governments

- Excellent interpersonal skills in enabling interactions with pre-eminent scientists and research institutions worldwide, while representing the interests of various functional groups within Merck

- Works well with others with diverse backgrounds and able to adapt to different cultures.

- Demonstrated ability to work within a collaborative environment with internal and external colleagues

- Collaborates with and imparts scientific information to persons from a broad cross-section of academic, research, and medical professionals and business disciplines and functions, including an ability to understand and work with scientists around the world

- Demonstrated ability to think strategically and to align medical, research, public health, and commercial strategies

- Exemplary communication skills

- Good judgment

- Effectively review scientific literature, prepare presentations, present and discuss scientific data in depth

- Adapt to and function professionally in diverse cultures internationally

- Fluent in spoken and written English

- Up to 25% travel (with overnight stays)

Preferred:

- Minimum of 5 years of pharmaceutical industry experience (e.g., clinical development, regulatory, epidemiology, and/or medical affairs)

- Experience publishing scientific papers

- Professional international experience
