Job Description: • 2-minute read •
Zendesk is looking for a Director of Total Rewards. Who might you be? You listen to your customers. You work to make things beautifully simple and intuitive. You have a passion for getting things right in Total Rewards and for being one step ahead of our needs. You’re a true partner for internal customers but have a keen eye towards what is happening externally.

Success in this role looks like this: you will have come in and taken the reins on foundational compensation practices and, with help from your team and partners, led the planning and optimization of these to get them right. Internal stakeholders will have high confidence in the data, employees will better understand the competitiveness of our “total rewards” (i.e., how base, equity, and benefits work in concert), Stock Administration teams will feel like our equity program is a tightly-run effort, managers will be more adept at explaining compensation independently, our compensation committee will have more confidence in how we’re structuring executive compensation and equity, and I personally, will be doing high fives.

This position is open in sunny (or foggy - depends on the hour) San Francisco and reports directly to the VP of People Operations. You will lead a team that manages Global Compensation, Global Mobility and Americas Benefits.

Responsibilities:

Lead total rewards for the company by optimizing a cohesive set of programs (salary, equity, benefits, variable pay, etc.) that align employee needs to business strategy.
Direct benchmarking activities across all areas of rewards and elevate our understanding of our competitiveness globally. Evolve the pay mix over time to fit the changing internal and external landscape.
Collaborate with Finance and Leadership to build and manage cyclical and non-cyclical compensation budgets and processes.
Collaborate with Recruiters, HR Business Partners and business leaders to understand their needs related to compensation and benefits. Provide counsel and build solutions appropriately (e.g., training for Managers on how to have a compensation conversation). Lead broader communications out to staff to ensure understanding of total rewards programs.
Select, collaborate with and challenge external suppliers, such as in the provision of benchmarking information, brokerage services or mobility solutions.
Provide proactive and expert analysis on the health of our total rewards programs with insightful visualization and modelling of data that helps make clear where we can improve and what our risks are.
Build and implement better total rewards governance and tracking tools and associated processes.
Support & counsel M&A efforts as they relate to reward.
Collaborate with Sales leadership to ensure sales compensation aligns with overall compensation philosophy
Support & partner on Compensation Committee preparation and follow-on actions.
Create a strong culture of recognition through the design (or re-design) of reward and recognition programs.
Manage staff reporting directly to you across the areas of Compensation, Global Mobility and AMER Benefits. Give actionable feedback, support them, and help them learn and grow.
Be an awesome teammate and business partner across all levels. Build good relationships. Be self aware and resolve conflict deftly / proactively. Build trust by seeking others inputs and keeping key stakeholders informed. Seek out and better understand the total rewards needs globally. Build your business acumen.
Requirements:

8+ years of relevant experience. Demonstrated experience in total rewards design and implementation. Comfort with executive compensation, equity, and compensation committees.
You are adept at “getting things right” and planning with data and related processes. You think ahead to solve where things could go wrong before it happens.
Excellent spreadsheet chops and proficiency with formulas / macros in Google docs. Laser focus on data.
Demonstrated competency with advanced compensation tools with a preference for Workday experience.
Proven ability to gauge effectiveness of the organization's compensation and benefits programs and translate data into solutions to continually improve programs and practices.
A creative approach to problem solving, with a humble, team oriented and optimistic attitude.
Strong verbal and written presentation skills including the ability to communicate complex ideas in a simple way and to tailor key messages and presentation style to multiple audiences. Communicates clearly, confidently, and effectively with colleagues at all levels.
Ability to think globally, strategically, and objectively.
Effectively translates data into actionable insights, strategies and plans and can articulate data visually and in an understandable manner.
Effective at leading but with a willingness to play a 'hands-on' role with key projects and workstreams.
“Driver mentality” and possesses the ability to prioritize on a consistent basis in an ever-changing environment. You get shit done and do it right the first time :)
Bachelor's degree required. Masters preferred.
