Roku is seeking a seasoned and motivated transactional attorney with experience supporting data-driven projects, including ad tech and analytics matters, to join its legal team. The successful candidate must have strong transactional drafting and negotiating skills, keen analytical abilities, a pragmatic approach to problem solving, a track record of success in handling complex business and legal issues in a fast-paced, technology-driven business environment, familiarity with both B2B and B2C aspects of the advanced advertising ecosystem, and a strong interest in keeping abreast of new developments and best practices in the areas of ad tech, big data and privacy.

This position will primarily involve working with and counseling Roku’s advertising sales, ad operations, engineering, research and analytics, consumer insights and data science teams. In this role, the successful candidate will help to ensure that Roku follows industry best practices in advanced digital advertising and complies with applicable law and regulations governing the collection, use and disclosure of first and third party data in the U.S. and international markets. This position will involve drafting and negotiating agreements with ad servers, data suppliers and data management companies, measurement and analytics companies, as well as other ad and technology platforms and providers in connection with a variety of commercial relationships. In addition to supporting data-driven projects for Roku’s advertising team, this person may be asked to help support various business teams on a variety of commercial contracts and vendor agreements, including hosted services arrangements. This person will also work closely with other members of the legal team in connection with the company’s broader data collection, use and transfer practices, including assessing, drafting, updating, implementing and monitoring guidelines, standard agreements, platform policies, processes and procedures implicating data privacy considerations arising out of new or existing laws and self-regulatory regimes.

Keeping up to date on the latest developments in the laws, rules and self-regulatory principles applicable to digital advertising and content distribution company, including the standards set forth by the FTC, DAA, NAI and IAB as well as applicable privacy laws is an important component of the job.

Experience/Qualifications

At least 8 years of transactional legal experience at a law firm and/or in house, that includes working with internet, technology and/or media companies in the ad tech/data space (e.g., ad serving, programmatic, data management, measurement and analytics)
Significant experience drafting and negotiating high-tech transactions, including but not limited to, software and technology licenses, development agreements, consulting and services agreements, and data-oriented arrangements
Skills and experience necessary to advise on a broad range of the legal issues related to data-driven advertising businesses, including intellectual property, data protection, consumer protection and privacy issues in the context of advertising related technology (e.g., use of beacons, cookies and cookie alternatives across devices, programmatic technologies and matching of datasets)
Prior experience in other relevant areas such as privacy, general advertising and marketing
Familiarity with insertion orders and IAB terms and conditions for digital advertising
Experience working in a cross-department, cross-functional role requiring good client relationship skills, including the ability to independently solicit the advice and input of different stakeholders as necessary and appropriate
Excellent business and legal judgment. Be able to assess risk and determine priorities based on that risk assessment as well as the needs of the business
Superior organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and complete them on time
Be able to thrive in a fast-paced environment and successfully manage aggressive deadlines
Be able to clearly communicate with all levels of management and outside counsel
Bachelor’s degree and a Juris Doctorate degree from a U.S. accredited law school
Licensed to practice law in the State of New York
Nice-to-have’s:

Prior experience working with high-growth or startup technology companies is strongly preferred
A technical degree is preferred
