The New York Times video unit is seeking a talented and creative director to oversee our core video team that produces all of our short form content including our explainer video, social video, breaking news analysis and feature video to enhance the current New York Times report. In this leadership position, the Director will be in charge of a 24/7 global breaking news video team across Asia, Europe and the U.S., and our core coverage across features, culture and other newsroom sections. In this leadership role, the director would set the daily news agenda for the video team and liaise with all newsroom desks. The role will be responsible for using data insights to evaluate impact and editorial strategy across all areas of coverage.
Watch: Career Advice The director will lead a team of producers and editors to conceive and produce compelling video-first, idea-driven, original reported, short form content in a fast-paced newsroom environment. The director’s team will create original video journalism by combining eyewitness video, social reporting, graphics, audio reporting, wire footage, and Times journalism for both The New York Times’ core platforms and other third-party platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and YouTube. The director’s team will also be responsible for producing raw news clips and live video for relevant events, which includes working with new live mediums like Facebook Live.
As Director of the Core News team, you will be responsible for the team’s budget and high-level decision making that is in line with the strong editorial judgment of the New York Times. We’re looking for candidates who have a passion for following evolving trends in digital media, monitoring new emerging platforms and a strong sense of what the core New York Times readers are looking to watch. As a leader of the team, you must be an innovative thinker who can grow the video unit’s audience and engagement while upholding the high journalistic standards of The Times. The role requires a strong sense of experimentation and an ability to thrive under pressure, working effectively under intense deadlines in breaking news situations.
REQUIREMENTS
5+ years experience managing the execution of news video content
Proven track record as a creative storyteller who can envision and direct the creation of captivating digital video with strong editorial judgment
Expertise in breaking news, original and social reporting, and live video
The desire and passion to create fresh content, try new things and experiment with new story formats
Experience in understanding user data and analytics to help track performance and highlight opportunities
Strong leadership skills with an ability to motivate and manage a staff, and the ability to attract and develop top talent and to collaborate with other Times coverage leaders
Solid multi-tasking skills and a strong work ethic
Willingness to work a flexible schedule that may occasionally include nights and weekends
A commitment to The New York Time’s strategy, standards and mission, and a deep knowledge of The Times’ digital video competitors and the video landscape
