Director Development Special Projects Harvard University Boston

Job Description:
The Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM) is looking for a talented, imaginative, focused, and proven fundraising officer to support of HSDM’s mission of clinical care, education and research, and to strengthen the School’s resources for years to come. The Director of Development and Special Projects is expected to expand, implement and coordinate a collaborative, comprehensive, and effective major gifts program.

This includes fundraising for special projects and events, working with the Dean’s Advisory Board, the School’s initiative integrating oral health and medicine, the School’s upcoming 150th anniversary year, and other assignments. The Director is responsible for developing and driving fundraising strategy for a variety of priorities and initiatives, with a focus on identifying, cultivating and soliciting major gifts of $100,000 or more from individuals and corporations.

This position will be a highly visible resource, and will partner and collaborate with the Development and Alumni Relations staff, the Dean, faculty, clinicians and researchers, educators, volunteers, and administrative colleagues. This position reports to the Head of the Development and Alumni Relations office.

The ideal candidate has experience as a frontline fundraiser; a record of successfully closing gifts, and has a comprehensive understanding of fundraising principles and practices. This position requires the highest levels of professionalism, collegiality, self-motivation, collaboration and organization. The Director must possess excellent communication skills, including the ability to develop strong relationships with internal and external constituencies to promote a positive collaborative spirit. The above covers the most significant responsibilities of the position. However, it does not exclude other duties, the inclusion of which would be in conformity with the level of the position.

In addition to the responsibilities noted above, the Director is also expected to:
plan and execute the School’s 150th anniversary in 2017;
work collaboratively with Development and Alumni Relations staff as well as others in the HSDM community
provide creative and strategic programming to identify donors and meet the School's needs and goals
develop and meet individual and School goals for gift cultivation and solicitation
build relationships with School researchers to connect them and their work with potential donors;
solicit scholarly gifts to support future students;
solicit transformational gift-level philanthropy;
build and manage her or his own portfolio of prospects;
recommend best practices in the development operation and contribute to the - strategic planning process which touches all areas of development;
address other duties as assigned.
