Director Development Harvard University Boston

Job Description:
The Director of Development is responsible for fundraising with individuals; she/he will serve as a key member of a newly forming external relations team. With a focus on key geographic markets, she/he will lead the cultivation and solicitation of individuals for gifts of $100k+ to $5M, and in some cases beyond. His/her primary focus is to identify, qualify and solicit prospects for major gifts while building comprehensive fund-raising program for Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health campaign priorities.

While overseeing all details relating to reporting, tracking, and follow-up for a dynamic portfolio with a focus on driving the solicitation process forward, the Director of Development (DOD) identifies new individual major and principal gift prospects; creates and implements strategy for solicitations; closely collaborates with Office for External Relations (OER) colleagues, faculty and leadership; identifies and executes timely stewardship strategies for major donors; strengthens, maintains and builds new relationships; develops and manages targeted events, and assists with strategic planning; and coordinates with other development, planned giving, and alumni relations staff at Harvard Chan and across Harvard University.

Portfolio Management (80%)
Director of Development will maintain a portfolio of approximately 125-150 prospects focused on a major market and possibly micro markets. By becoming familiar with and articulate about the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health, including its mission, culture, academic/professional programs and fund-raising objectives, the DOD will create individualized solicitation plans leading to major gifts in support of Harvard Chan’s fundraising priorities. It is expected that 80% of DOD's time is focused on meeting with prospects and donors, either on the road or on campus. DOD’s are responsible for identifying their top portfolio prospects and determining fundraising objectives on an annual basis.

Basic Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree Required
8+ years successful experience in major gift fundraising preferably in higher education
Must be willing to travel; some night and weekend work required.

Additional Qualifications

Ability to understand the needs and interests of leadership and major gift donors in order to develop relationships between them and Harvard Chan.
Interest in all aspects of education and a dedication to promoting Harvard Chan/Harvard fundraising priorities through developing excellent relationships with faculty, senior academic leaders, volunteers, and the members of the External Relations team.
Successful experience in making cold calls as well as developing cultivation and solicitation strategies.
Excellent interpersonal skills and a demonstrated record of completing assignments.
