Job Description:
We are in search of a Director of Corporate Communications for Rakuten, our parent company. This is a full-time position located in our new Rakuten San Mateo office and will report to the President of Rakuten USA. The Director of Corporate Communications should be practical, clear, creative, business-focused, and a team player with a positive, can-do attitude. The role will provide corporate communications support to the Rakuten family of companies in the USA with frequent collaboration with Tokyo HQ.
Responsibilities
Construct and implement internal communications policies, protocols, and procedures to ensure alignment with RAKUTEN corporate and marketing strategic objectives
Provide counsel and communications support for the executive team on employee communication opportunities
Develop new employee communications programs and initiatives by working cross-functionally with business leaders and departments, ensuring that employee communications plans are aligned with corporate strategies, in sync with company leadership, and measured against company-wide goals
Manage outside consultants and vendor relationships to support employee communications programs
Help RAKUTEN create a culture of trust, execution, integrity, respect, and teamwork and can provide leadership and direction on cultural integration of new businesses acquired through mergers or acquisitions
Work closely with RAKUTEN executives and others in corporate leadership and legal in responding to crisis of varying scope and severity. This includes developing and implementing employee communications responses and plans under tight time constraints with limited resources
Leverage media and communication vehicles to capture attention in a global, professional, and highly technical environment with a focus on employer brand
Partner with HQ Corporate to provide consistent global and regional communication
A demonstrated ability to effectively partner with multiple parts of an organization
The ability to engage external stakeholders in the community
Review and analyze data to measure the effectiveness, impact, and engagement of communications programs and special projects
Qualifications
7-10+ years of employee/corporate communications experience in a well-regarded high tech company working in a fast paced, high growth, and international environment
Strong knowledge of principles in effective communications and mass media, publicity, advertising, organizational structure, and internal employee communications
Proven strategic employee communications design, planning and execution skills are key, as are strong client relationship management and partnering skills
Demonstrated high level of professionalism, confidentiality, and judgment
Must be an articulate and persuasive communicator with outstanding written and presentation skills
Prior experience in large, growing, and multi-functional organizations is required
Must be savvy in global settings
BA/BS degree required. Communications or related graduate degree, or MBA a plus
Preferred background in public relations, journalism, communications, or related discipline
