Senior Director - State and Local Government Affairs - Herbalife - Los Angeles


Job description
The Sr. Director, State and Local Government Affairs conducts the strategic lobbying activities in designated region, including approximately 10-15 states; owns the development, advocacy, communications and execution of key business legislative initiatives and issue response in the states; is accountable for identifying business risks and developing defensive and responsive strategies to address legislative and public policy initiatives that could also affect the ability of the company to develop or market its products; and oversees and directs the activities of contract lobbyists in several states in the region.
Responsible for briefing and staffing C-level company executives and others in meetings with elected officials, community organizations and NGOs. Accountable for identifying business risks and developing defensive and responsive strategies to address legislative and public policy initiatives that could also affect the ability of the company to develop or market its products. Responsible for ensuring communication of risks, strategies and activities with internal teams to ensure alignment at every stage. Oversees and directs the activities of contract lobbyists in several states in the region.

DETAILED RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES:


Develops and executes strategic action plans on wide variety of public policy and business issues of importance to Herbalife in the geographic region.
Advocates with key government officials, legislative committees and other entities the incorporation of Herbalife's position into state legislative and public policy initiatives of importance to the Company.
Substitutes for the VP of State & Local Government Affairs in meetings with key officials and influencers where necessary.
Assists in Political Action Committee activities.
Builds, fosters and maintains beneficial relationships with key government officials, legislative committees and other entities that define or influence state policy decisions affecting Herbalife.
Defines contract lobbyist responsibilities and directs activities in order to execute action plans designed to maximize Herbalife's impact on policy makers.
Drafts memos, educational materials, and presentations, as necessary, for the senior Herbalife business and government affairs leadership detailing the impact of government decisions on the company’s business and public policy interests
Oversees and directs vendor activities for state events
Plans and executes events for state and local officials designed to increase awareness of Herbalife.
Assures strict adherence to lobbying disclosure and all ethical requirements applicable to government relations activities within each state in the region


External relationships include: Governors and staff, Legislators and staff, County officials and staff, Mayors and staff, and state and local agencies. Owns the relationships with various national and regional business, policy and political organizations, such as the Republican/Democratic Attorneys General Association, National Conference of State Legislators, National Black Conference of State Legislators and the National Hispanic Conference of State Legislators.
Internal relationships include: C-suite, Legal, Communications, NAM, Regulatory Compliance and Member Engagement

Skills


Lobbying or campaign experience, including, demonstrated ability to effectively deliver information, and explain, advocate and negotiate with a broad spectrum of individuals.
Excellent advocacy skills and ability to influence.
Global outlook and adept at understanding and interacting with diverse cultures.Able to dissect the most complex government policies and quickly identify the implications for Herbalife.
Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Intellectually robust, emotionally intelligent, inquisitive, and confident.
Strong work ethic, with a willingness to “roll up his/her sleeves” to make things happen. An advisor who leads by example and has the ability to drive through to solutions to problems quickly and effectively.

Experience


12 years demonstrated experience with legislative, executive and public-policy-making bodies required.
Prior experience being on a state and/or local governmental staff
In-depth understanding of state political and legislative processes
5 years of experience in a leadership, management or project management role

Education
Bachelor’s degree

Preferred Qualifications


At least 15 years of experience with legislative, executive and public-policy-making bodies required.
Advanced degree preferred
