This position requires business knowledge, leadership ability and a technical understanding of how a television station operates. The news director is r
esponsible for overall planning, development and production of all news programming on multiple platforms, including management of the news staff, and determining editorial and creative standards for all news programming and strategic planning and positioning for audience growth.


The news director will be required to manage an annual operating budget, personnel management and the technical aspects of television. He or she must also have solid news judgment - the ability to determine which stories are most informative and of the greatest value to the local viewer.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsible for all activities of TWC News, including editorial, operational and financial managementLead the editorial direction of programming including long-range planning for major news eventsDevelop and manage departmental expenses and operation budgets. Evaluate the needs of the department through strict expense management.Hire, supervise and develop news staffConduct annual performance evaluations for news managers and other direct reportsNegotiate contracts with talent, agents and vendorsPrepare and present to senior management plans for special projects, new programming initiatives and budgetsLiaison with Sales and Traffic DepartmentsWork closely with Creative Services to promote and market the TWC News brand in Albany and the Hudson ValleyEnforce strict journalist, ethical and legal standardsSet goals for editorial staffMaintain a positive work environment by motivating and communicating in a manner that works well with co-workers, supervisors and customersApprove time cards, vacation requests and expenses for News Dept.Works closely with other TWC News Directors to efficiently allocate resources across the News and Local Programming DivisionPerform other duties as assigned
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsible for providing direct and indirect supervision to a staff of approximately 150 employees in Albany as well as in the Hudson Valley.

Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Solid leadership and financial management skillsExtensive knowledge of television news journalism practices, ethics and proceduresExcellent written and oral communication skillsStrong interpersonal skills and ability to motivate and train individualsAbility to make quick decisions and meet very strict deadlinesAdept at embracing new technologyMulti-tasking skills a must

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE

Four (4) year college degree required; Journalism degree preferred10 years news experience including a minimum of 3 years experience as a senior level managerMust be able to maintain business and personnel information in a confidential manner.Television news or video production background is a plus.
