Director - Design - Marmot Mountain - San Francisco


Job description
The primary responsibility of the Director of Design and Product Development is to provide the leadership and vision that guides the inspiration and design work which creates innovative and technologically advanced products appropriate for Marmot.

This position owns the responsibility for the management of the Design department, the output and execution of designs by the team, the management of any freelance support and initiatives, and the alignment of product to specific financial goals of the company.


The Director of Design is proficient in leading the design efforts in the creation of whole collections around coherent themes, functions, and that achieve the needs and goals established at the beginning of the design process.

This individual will create a foundation of trust and confidence with the design team to exceed expectations and generate the best of class in design with a new standard of viable products on a global level. This leadership will enhance the existing history of successful product innovations and exemplify a new level of intelligent designs with appropriate and compelling style that moves the market.

The Director of Design will serve as a mentor and teacher on the product team while challenging and offering inspiration to experienced Designers to perform at a high level.



ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS (Other responsibilities may be assigned)

Responsible for the high-quality execution of all Marmot product designs.
Manages the product assortment with the Category Manager to align category expansion plans with individual product direction and development focused on innovation, performance and market share growth.
Leads and manages the execution and alignment of all designs and collections appropriate to product and design brief.
Manages the creation of high quality design packages during design process: Use of Illustration, Designer, and Developer resources to support design effort.
Tracks the design and development schedule to ensure a timely completion following the predetermined product development calendar.
Research and communicate industry and design trends that will influence Marmots Design process.
Partners with fabric and material team to develop innovative fabrications and commercially viable product innovations.
Lead the creation and presentation of well-defined ideas and concepts as necessary to internal staff, dealers, and outside agents.
Responsible for proof of concept work by design team.
Manages, schedules, and facilitates performance of category design staff including freelance designers.

Desired Skills and Experience
EDUCATION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor's Degree in Design (apparel), or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Two years at the Director level or Five years at the Management level.
Experience in flat sketching expertise.
Hands-on experience with CAD software.
Experience in creation of design packages and execution of product designs.
Experience in designing successful products and collections.
Experience in research and analysis and design cycles.
Experience in managing complete product and collection cycles.
Successful track record in managing a team of design and developers to execute upon primary objectives.
SKILLS and SPECIFICATIONS

Strong knowledge of formulating color palettes.
Strong knowledge in creating collections for the retail floor.
Strong knowledge and understanding of apparel construction.
Excellent communications skills, including the ability to present concepts to product teams and reviewboards in a persuasive manner, and communicate responsibilities and timelines to designers on team.
Strong knowledge of product cycles, product design and development process.
Strong understanding of designing for market, trend, and end uses; evaluating those attempts.
Basic knowledge of manufacturing processes and comfortable in foreign work environments.
Strong knowledge of aesthetic form and the ability to design for different consumers and end uses.
Basic knowledge of textile and material construction and properties.
Basic knowledge of product costs and impact of design.
Ability to manage and inspire other designers.
