Senior Director - Segment Marketing - Ciena - San Jose


Job description
Responsible for the Marketing deliverable associated with Ciena’s Global Networking solutions; for Internet Content Provider (ICP) and cloud exchange customers in all regions of Ciena’s market coverage. Functions include messaging, positioning, content creation, support of business development and sales activities, support of marketing events and public relation activities, and support of website content.

While this role is focused on marketing functions of awareness, education, and sales enablement, the role will also at times provide segment expertise to support Ciena’s cross-functional strategic planning and go-to-market initiatives.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

SME on Messaging, positioning, content creation, support of business development and sales activities, support of marketing events and public relation activities, and support of website content for ICP and cloud exchange segments.

Systematically understand customer needs and associated market/business opportunities for Ciena’s goods and services. Use this understanding to generates key insights which match customer needs and desires to Ciena’s unique capabilitiesCreate content in all forms, including external corporate website, internal intranet, presentation materials, sales training, etc
Support sales engagements with expertise, creativity, and great listening and integration skills.
Understand the “watering holes” , pain points and vocabulary used by the industry to make sure that right relationships can be built and can drive growth in market share in those segments.
Direct input to Solutions PLM teams to drive functional requirements and help improve our solution offered

Analyses to aid GFO pertaining to solution pricing, packaging, and creative deal-making ideas:

Includes competitive positioning, value propositions for Ciena’s goods and services, and out-of-box ideas on how to increase Ciena’s value to the customer.
Partner with GFO to articulate insightful solutions to customer problems and Ciena’s unique advantages.

Required Skills
Solid technical and business background with extensive experience in and knowledge of the packet optical networks and cloud connect architectures.
Data Center expertise in terms of network designs, technologies used, and operational paradigms, and culture.
Virtual Team influencing skills: ability to drive cross-departmental initiatives, such as related marketing campaigns, in the setting where responsibility for success is owned, but position power does not necessarily exist.
Solid understanding of ICP industry objectives, wants/needs, processes, culture, vocabulary
Ability to develop lasting relationships with customers and go-to-market partners
Seasoned and proven interpersonal skills with a proven ability to achieve results through alignment of cross-functional and multi-divisional activities in a highly collaborative, team-oriented, and fast-paced environment.
Proven Marketing experience in understanding customer pain points and desires, finding the best solutions.
Extraordinary communications and presentation skills to internal/external customers, analysts, press, and internal constituents. Extraordinary listening skills and creativity
Required Experience
MS/BS, EE/CS – MBA valuable but not necessary
10+ years’ work experience in networking / Telecom industry
Experience in a customer facing role
Experience working with ICPs, cloud exchanges, or other data center operators is considered a strong asset
Excellent writing & oral communication skills
