Job description
We are seeking a senior-level Director of Business Intelligence (BI), Big-Data Analytics who will be responsible for leading a team of data scientists, data analysts and big-data engineers. This role reports to the VP of DIRECTV's Enterprise BI. The ideal candidate will have experience in deploying, designing, and implementing big-data solutions using a diverse set of technologies and solutions.
This leader will head a team that builds the powerful data discovery and analytical capabilities/models that provide the insight that drives strategic decisions for the enterprise and that optimizes business performance. The position will support each business unit with their data discovery and analytics.
The ideal candidate will possess the thought-leadership skills to drive the BI big-data agenda and the interpersonal and networking skills to develop critical relationships across the organization. His/Her mission is to turn the team of data scientists and analysts into a data analytics powerhouse—to make the team the solution center where DIRECTV internal business stakeholders want to go when they need to discover or solve a business problem using data.
This position requires a solution-oriented candidate with a combination of deep business acumen, knowledge of statistical best practices, and an analytical mindset. The candidate must have the ability to anticipate requirements for big-data solutions to solve business problems and provide data solutions that are organized and simple to understand. The candidate must be highly collaborative, team-minded person who does not need to "own" everything in order to drive better outcomes for the business and for the team.

Essential duties & responsibilities:
Building and leading a team of data scientists, analysts/data explorers, statistical modelers, data visualization specialists, and big-data software engineers. Providing senior-level support in the area of big data to identify data opportunities, solve complex problems and optimize business performance. Partnering with BI practitioners and delivery leadership to facilitate problem-solving sessions with business leaders from across the organization.
50%—Leadership:
Build, lead, and inspire a team of data specialists who will create and develop a world-class data capability
Set the cultural tone for world-class data analytics in the enterprise
Continually review new technologies and enhancements to data delivery, reporting, and analytics
Provide enterprise-wide leadership on data to senior stakeholders, bringing them on the data journey
Develop challenging performance and development objectives for all direct reports and provide regular feedback and coaching to maximize potential, build on team successes, and overcome challenges
Develop processes to translate analytical results into business language for strategic applications
Maintain a track record of attracting, hiring, developing, and retaining “A” talent; act as a mentor to team members and be passionate about their development
Persuade others to pursue important courses of action, which they may not have been initially inclined to accept by developing relationships and obtaining buy-in
20%—Delivery:
Develop and maintain key stakeholder relationships to ensure that the data team consistently meets priority requirements to a high standard
Continuously search for new data sources, define and improve analysis models, analyze and understand subscriber dynamics and viewership (including churn management, acquisition, lifetime value, loyalty, key performance metrics, behavioral segmentation, hardware and packaging migration, and predictive modeling analysis), then communicating the relevant information to management and business owners
With an emphasis on new data sources, drive the planning, implementation, and ongoing management of churn-reduction programs within DIRECTV
Create and maintain the structures necessary to ensure highly efficient, effective, and lean data operations
Drive the change agenda for the data team by creating a clear vision and roadmap for development that uses agile change management to deliver clear business value
Manage total data costs for the business areas, driving down the long-term costs of the data team
Provide high-quality data and information to our customers
Establish and drive a big-data delivery model using strategic tool sets
20%—Strategic Development
Introduce best-in-class and innovative tools and techniques to enable business to leverage all data as a strategic asset to drive customer loyalty and business performance
Develop and drive the strategic-data agenda for each business area. Ensure that the data capabilities are best in class and continue to evolve as the business continues to grow and change
Establish a world-class, big-data strategy and ensure it aligns with DIRECTV’s data management goals, establishing services as required to meet the rapidly changing business demand for data
Ensure the strategic agenda is fully aligned with DIRECTV’s business strategy and is supported by key stakeholders
10%—Governance:
Ensure the DIRECTV enterprise consistently adheres to data governance requirements that ensure data safety and resiliency
Establish trusted sources of data
Build and maintain strong links with legal and regulatory compliance, information security, and information risk management functions to meet legal, regulatory and policy requirements
Set the tone and context for high standards of control over data and information
Desired Skills and Experience
A bachelor’s degree in mathematics, computer science, or engineering is required. An advanced degree from a highly respected academic institution is strongly preferred
12+ years leading highly experienced analytical and technical teams.
Detailed knowledge of systems and processes used in data management
10+ years of data-management experience
8+ years of analytics experience
Strong knowledge in application development using JAVA, PYTHON, R, etc.
Deep experience with data mining, data analytics, predictive modeling, and advanced modeling techniques.
Literate in data technology with a detailed understanding of the data technology architecture, data development lifecycle, and data tools and technologies, particularly in memory/database and open source technology (e.g,. hadoop, Pig, Hive, mahout, SQL, Map, Reduce, Yarn, HBase) and vendor-specific tools like Aster and Impala.
Experience with business intelligence and reporting tools such as Cognos and Qlik View.
Prior experience with large, distributed RDBMS (e.g., Teradata, SAS, Aster Data, and Oracle)
Knowledge of cloud computing (e.g., Amazon Web Services, RackSpace Cloud, and OpenStack) is a plus.
Extensive experience presenting findings to an executive audience.
Knowledge, skills and abilities:
Leadership/Management Skills—Substantial experience leading a team of highly skilled technical experts from diverse backgrounds, like BI application development, data warehousing, big and real-time fast data processing, and analytics and data visualization. Must be able to create and communicate a compelling vision and develop a strategy to deliver that vision. This group leader must have a “build to last” mindset when setting up this big-data competency and must focus on building his/her organization by recruiting the right talent and providing further development opportunities. The position requires experience with commercial contract negotiation, chairing commercial and operational reviews with suppliers, and the ability to extract maximum value from data technology suppliers and consultancy practices.
Communication Skills—This individual will spend a great deal of time interacting with executives, business management/analysts, and IT/BI technical developers. Articulate language skills and outstanding writing ability are absolutely necessary to thrive
Analytical Skills—This individual's skill set must include outstanding analytical/statistical skills to properly translate DIRECTV’s business opportunities and needs into big-data solutions. Experience using advanced data analytics and insights techniques (e.g., predictive, segmentation, recommendation and sentiment analytics, machine learning techniques, and leveraging structured and unstructured data) is essential.
Problem Solving Skills—The ability to create workable solutions to business problems is a very critical skill for performing the job successfully.
Decision-Making Skills—As a consultant to management and an advisor to developers, this leader will be called upon for sound judgment in a wide variety of complex business matters, any number of which could determine the viability of the business for years to come.
Negotiation Skills—This leader will serve as a liaison between big-data scientists and business partners. Interacting with a variety of personality types to work towards solutions and maintaining relationships.
Technical Skills—In order to successfully identify business solutions, this individual must know what big-data technologies are being used, what new possible outcomes can be achieved through current platforms, and what the latest technology offers. Gaining respect and creating a sense of confidence among IT and business partners requires this leader to speak with authority in the dual languages of business and technology and to demonstrate a strong technical and business aptitude. Experience with lean and agile methodologies is essential.
