Senior Director - Engineering - Baxter Healthcare - Round Lake


Job description
Lead the Engineering Center within the Device Engineering organization, which has strategic functions that have shared capability and can be leveraged across multiple franchise product lines and therapies.
• Realize the development of a strategy for implementing robust processes in the areas of Risk, Reliability, and Configuration Management for the Device Engineering Organization with the newly formed Risk and Reliability team.

• Drive common practices and strategy around product certification and safety, interpretation of standards and regulations in a global industry, and shared and optimized usage of lab facilities and equipment across multiple R&D sites.
• Own the compliance and implementation to global usability standards and Human Factors requirements for all products through product lifecycle management (from ideation, development, sustainability, and end of life management activities).
• Build and enable the leverage of common technical competencies and capabilities around experimental engineering, analysis, and prototyping; ensure prioritized leverage of these capabilities across all franchise product lines.
• Drive collaboration within Device Engineering, as well as with cross-functional partners from Marketing, Manufacturing, Quality, Regulatory and other outside organizations as necessary.
• Build organization structure and team culture that attracts and retains top technical talent and drives innovation.
• Ensure strategic and tactical goals of business are met through execution on R&D commitments.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Support lifecycle management of products from ideation, development, and sustainability for all devices in different franchise portfolios; drive for innovation in all aspects of product development.
2. Ensure the reliability and cost targets of devices, and build that into the DNA of the organization.
3. Ensure technical competency and expertise in the organization around risk, product safety requirements, reliability, usability requirements, global regulatory standards and compliance.
4. Partner with the different product therapy teams to understand the technology roadmaps; identify and build strategic technical competencies that can be leveraged across these product lines.
5. Build a leadership layer and pipeline of technical and functional talent.
6. Drive effective collaboration with external partners where needed.
7. Develop organizational structure and culture for attracting, developing and retaining top talent.
8. Ensures that all projects are staffed appropriately and infrastructure resources are maintained and sufficient to design, develop and sustain high quality products.

Desired Skills and Experience
Qualifications:
1. Must possess strong knowledge of engineering disciplines and solid knowledge of related disciplines.
2. Experience with medical device product lifecycle management over multiple releases.
3. Experience and demonstrated ability to partner with global service providers.
4. Demonstrate understanding of business drivers, customer needs and global dynamics to create viable strategic plans for product and technology development.
5. Proven track record of management/leadership effectiveness with global and multi-site teams.
6. Must possess strong ability to negotiate and maximize effectiveness of resources and influence others internally and externally.
7. Is dedicated to meeting the expectations and requirements of internal and external customers.
8. Understanding of global regulatory requirements for medical devices; risk and reliability concepts for development; and the need to deliver quality products and/or processes.
9. Acts in accordance with his/her beliefs, even when they are unpopular or in the minority.
10. Establishes processes that are repeatable and sustainable.

Education and/or Experience:
BS in relevant engineering discipline, with advanced technical degree or equivalent experience
15 or more years of relevant technical experience
Organizational leadership experience required.
