Director - US International Technology - Amazon - Seattle

In order to continue to serve our customers worldwide better, Amazon’s International Technology group (InTech) is investing in a senior technical leader, based in our Seattle headquarters, who will oversee the development and product management teams that deliver the unique requirements for our businesses in Brazil, Japan, and other emerging markets.
In this role you will be responsible for leading a technical team that owns delivering large projects end-to-end. Responsibilities of the team include collection of business and systems requirements, writing specifications, driving project schedules and development from design to release, as well as managing the production launch. This leader will manage the team as well as lead and coordinate efforts between the Seattle organization and other teams around the globe.
You will be expected to make appropriate tradeoffs to optimize time-to- market, clearly communicate goals, roles, responsibilities, and desired outcomes to internal cross-functional and remote project teams. You will partner with the other leaders to define and drive substantial parts of the customer experience for multiple services and systems in the Amazon architecture.

As the leader of our Seattle international technology and product development team, you will be a practical visionary with a proven track record of translating business needs into solutions that scale technically and operationally and are focused on delivery of innovative and high reliability solutions. You will own the definition of the technology roadmap that defines how Amazon’s platform components and unique features and/or services evolve to better serve target customers. Defining and building the necessary software and other technology needed to host the various websites, as well as providing the tools and technology that enhance the customer experience will all be aspects of this role.
The right candidate will possess a strong technical program management background, will have demonstrated experience leading medium to large projects, and will have a well-rounded software development background in current web technologies. You must be able to thrive and succeed in an entrepreneurial environment, and not be hindered by ambiguity or multiple competing priorities. This means you are not only able to develop and drive high-level strategic initiatives, but can also roll up your sleeves, dig in and get the job done. As a technical manager, you will anticipate bottlenecks, provide escalation management, anticipate and make trade-offs, and balance the business needs versus technical constraints. An ability to take large, complex initiatives and break them down into manageable pieces is expected. Maturity, high judgment, negotiation skills, ability to influence, analytical talent, and leadership are essential to success in this role. The ideal candidate is strong in execution and motivated to deliver results quickly. The position offers excellent opportunities to grow as a technical and business leader within Amazon. This leadership position will be based in Seattle and will report into the head of the International Technology organization.

The Head of US Technology and Product Development will:
• Learn the Consumer business in the countries you support end to end as well as the unique needs across the International businesses as inputs to an in depth technology roadmap.
• Implement the structure of the development and product management organization to meet business objectives and establish teams with clear mandates and direction to enable a superior customer experience’. Set high standards for the organization through operational leadership goals and strategic direction, and drive teams to deliver high quality products, services, and processes.
• Build the organization by maintaining high standards in hiring and talent management through rigorous talent calibration, development and succession planning.
• Partner with global technology organizations to enable the platform software and services to be leveraged by the international marketplaces to independently run their businesses.
• Implement Amazon processes and practices, accounting for local laws, customs, and practices, in running all aspects of the business; including all financial management and proper accounting for Intellectual Property and Services.
• Develop operational plans, set and meet aggressive goals, and direct the staff in evolving and advancing the year over year business objectives - setting appropriate metrics and performance indicators that measure progress against goals. Define and implement the operational processes and tools to provide the local business teams the necessary speed of execution to configure the platform. Establish regular operational reviews and communications with key management as part of business and operational accountability and reporting.
• Manage complex obstacles that impact target regions, multiple divisions and escalate effectively and efficiently across all levels of leadership throughout the company while maintaining companywide view.
• Embrace and promote the Amazon culture and leadership principles throughout the organization.

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Information Systems, Computer Science or equivalent.
Fluent written and spoken English essential.
Strong experience of managing a multi-discipline technical team including PMs, TPMs, SDEs, and Testing.
Proven Technical Program Management experience in a related industry.
Demonstrable expertise within current ecommerce and web-technologies.
Experience managing efforts in Unix/Linux environments, distributed systems and/or developing large-scale web applications.
Deep understanding of and passion for e-commerce.
Is a superb negotiator, at ease sitting down with top level executives with vendors and manufacturers
