To help drive the vision and deliver on data sciences initiatives, especially related to machine learning, Amazon Local is looking for a Sr. Research Scientist.
This is a critical role with significant scope and potential for game-changing business impact. The candidate will be responsible for solving big problems in the areas of forecasting, personalization, merchandising, business performance analysis and other business applications.
Key Responsibilities
1. Work closely with management, software engineering leaders, and business teams to devise, plan and execute data science initiatives to provide measurable business impact
2. Drive the use of machine learning to improve multiple business processes across AmazonLocal
3. Collaborate with other machine learning scientists at Amazon to drive the use of best practices and to cross-fertilize ideas
4. Triage many possible courses of action in a high-ambiguity environment, making use of both quantitative analysis and business judgment.
5. Build an end-to-end, continuous metrics process around each data science initiative, providing visibility into key business and operational parameters.
6. Design, drive implementation of, and analyze novel experiments which prove significant results to drive the AmazonLocal business
7. Collaborate with software engineering teams to integrate experimental capabilities into large-scale, highly complex Amazon production systems.
8. Report results in a manner which is both statistically rigorous and compellingly relevant.
9. Assist in recruiting, mentoring, developing, and training other Research Scientists as well as other technical roles when needed.
5+ years applied analytics and data sciences experience
Demonstrated experience leading and building an analytics team for three years or more.
Leadership of experienced scientists and data engineers
M.S. in Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Operations Research, or a related field with publications in refereed academic journals.
Expertise in SAS and/or R and SQL. Application of these tools to build statistical models and to lead teams of data engineer, business analysts, and research scientists building models.
Application of these modeling techniques on large sets of data.
PhD in Mathematics, Statistics, Operations Research, or in a field of experimental science.
Ability to manage and quantify improvement in an area of the company’s business resulting from the application of business analytics, statistical models, optimization techniques, and machine learning.
Demonstrated use of modeling results to improve business decisions, particularly using model-based decision criteria in real time systems.
Experience with forecasting and time series analysis.
Experience with risk analysis for both transactional process and long term decisions
Good communication skills with both technical and business people. Ability to speak at a level appropriate for the audience.
Experience writing scripts (Perl, Ruby, Groovy) to manipulate data and developing software in traditional programming languages (C++, Java, Clojure, Python).
Experience implementing machine learning algorithms, tailored to particular business needs and tested on large datasets.
Familiarity with theory and practice of information retrieval, relevance, machine learning, and data mining.
Familiarity with data visualization (e.g. R, ggplot, ggobi, Tableau).Familiarity designing simulation and optimization models in for business decisions (e.g., portfolio optimization)
Excellent critical thinking skills, combined with the ability to present your beliefs clearly and compellingly in both verbal and written form.
Strong desire to push your ideas into production, overcoming obstacles, in order to benefit Amazon's customers
