The Senior Director of Product Line Management Core Packet Products is responsible for driving growth in Ciena’s Packet business through ownership of the product strategy, product investment and end-to-end lifecycle management of Ciena’s Packet portfolio. They will provide leadership, expertise and direction instrumental to the definition, development, manufacturing, marketing and sales of Ciena’s Core Packet products.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Define create and continuously refine product positioning strategy for packet core products.
Drive cross functional team consisting of Sales, Marketing, CTO, and R&D to establish a portfolio strategy for accelerated growth in the market by systematically analyzing customer needs, product requirements and associated market opportunities.
Working with finance, establish business cases for future portfolio investments to underpin the portfolio strategy that clearly define the financial, operational and strategic assumptions and objectives
Translate portfolio strategy into actionable product requirements and associated release plans. Manage R&D investment priorities for market share and revenue growth. Work with sales, lead customers and R&D to prioritize and communicate the resulting portfolio.
Working with marketing, ensure that our competitive differentiation is clearly articulated and understood by our sales team and customers.
Support sales activities through active involvement in lead customer engagements and key bid activities.
Drive lifecycle management of products from product/feature concept through to product retirement.
Drive market pricing strategies and product cost reduction programs to balance footprint growth with long term portfolio profitability
Work with broader PLM leadership team to ensure a complete cross portfolio evolution strategy is in place to ensure Ciena meets its corporate goals.

Required Skills

Strong product background in carrier grade switching and routing is a must
Proven experience of driving new product introduction into customer accounts with emphasis on service provider, MSO and Content provider space
Proven experience of growing a product business in a competitive environment
Keen business sense and general management experience to drive lifecycle management of complex products and solutions from concept through retirement with clear focus on strategic and operational goals and objectives
Strong program and project management skills with a meticulous attention to detail in orchestrating efforts across multiple functional disciplines while overseeing and coordinating all constituents elements of product line profit and loss drivers
Seasoned interpersonal skills with a proven ability to achieve results through alignment of cross-functional and multi-divisional activities in a highly collaborative, team-oriented, and fast-paced environment
Extraordinary communications and presentation skills (customers, analysts, press, and internal constituents)
Demonstrated ability to build trusted relationships with customers, suppliers and other functional organizations

Required Experience

Minimum BS in engineering (with telecommunications, networking or communications systems concentration) – or equivalent experience
MBA desired
10+ years of relevant industry experience with successful and progressive track record of accomplishment, leadership and increasing responsibility, including at least 5 years of significant product line management experience
