Position Summary
The Senior Director of Business Applications is responsible for providing strategic direction for the creation, development, execution, and leadership of all aspects of Business Applications for the company beginning with creation of an application vision and strategy that aligns with organizational goals and objectives. Reporting directly to the Chief Information Officer, the Senior Director of Business Applications will be responsible for application development, maintenance and support. The application team has responsibility for the 24/7 delivery of all end-user services to all business units and business locations throughout CPS Energy. The successful candidate will be charged with the continued advancement of these systems across the organization.
This executive role will champion change throughout the technology organization as well as the corporation as a whole, providing visible improvements and tangible returns on investments. This position requires a smart, assertive, charismatic, energetic and results-driven leader who has the ability to succeed in a results-focused organization. The successful candidate possesses strong management and leadership skills combined with the ability to work effectively and collaboratively across all organizations within the company.
The Senior Director of Business Applications must excel at leading teams responsible for architecting, designing, building and operating CPS’s business applications. The leader must challenge the status quo to continually evolve technology team members, supported technologies and services to drive operating efficiency, and enable the business process.
The ideal candidate will have a full understanding of how a world-class technology application organization leverages products, services, and strategies to assist the overall technology organization in optimizing service delivery, increasing efficiencies, and eliminating emergency and/or critical situations. They will possess an innovative and change-oriented personality that is tempered with political savvy to achieve immediate business improvements in areas that were before deemed difficult, off-limits, or unchangeable. The person will need forethought and direction on overall industry process changes, technology shifts that could apply to the industry and trends that will benefit the overall architecture, design, and performance of the solutions.
Job Function
• Oversee the operations of the CPS applications which includes ensuring reliable, secure operations and troubleshooting and performing problem resolution to minimize system performance issues and outages
• Ensure that application changes are appropriately documented, tested and reviewed and occur in agreed change control windows with appropriate monitoring
• Direct, mentor & retain members of the team; maintain culture, set up recruiting strategies, identify new talent; implement process to allow scale and, ultimately, create the best organization in the market
• Define the technology stack required in alignment with architectural standards to support all CPS applications. Reviewing application technology plans and projects to ensure compliance to overall company and IT strategies
• Provide staff development, succession planning, workforce planning for the application organization
• Set application priorities consistent with company business plan and IT strategy
• Develop and recommend operating/capital budgets and control expenditures within approved budget objectives
• Obtain market and customer requirements and develop them into an application development strategy to deliver on-time/on-budget delivery of software features and functionality
• Directs and maintains a customer-focused, agile and accountable organization that delivers high-quality and defect free application release
• Drive a continuous improvement culture and management practices in application development and management
• Lead the development of policies, standards and guidelines that direct the selection, development, implementation and use of information technology within the enterprise
• Direct the risks associated with information and IT assets through appropriate standards and security policies
• Drive overall direction of development and business intelligence projects and vision including scope, client services and support needs
• Problem Management – Ensure the enterprise production organization provides effective technology support and problem management services. This function includes development of proactive processes for problem detection, reporting, tracking, and measurement
• Performance Management & Monitoring – Implement and manage processes and applications to proactively monitor the health and welfare of the company’s business applications to address concerns and issues before they happen
• Applications Availability Management – Develop and manage processes designed to meet or exceed services levels for application availability
• Capacity Management – Create and manage forecasting processes designed to ensure application capabilities are adequate for business environment needs
• Maintenance & Configuration Management – Ensure effective processes are in place to continuously refresh
application, maintain proper release levels, and proactively apply security patches
• Disaster Recovery – responsible for the development and execution of an improved strategy for disaster recovery for all IT application supporting CPS Energy
• Vendor Management – Act as primary interface for critical IT application vendor relationships
Desired Skills and Experience
EDUCATION
Required:
• Bachelor’s degree in a related field with a balance between business and MIS.
Preferred:
• MBA from accredited university preferred.
EXPERIENCE
Required:
• Minimum 8 years managing as a IT leader, at least 4 years in a senior level technical role, mentoring, motivating and growing a mature and goal-driven delivery team; must have strong history of developing people, both technically and individually.
• Demonstrated expertise in all traditional application areas, including: architecture, development, maintenance, quality assurance, and testing.
• Proven success serving as a strong change agent and leader, with a track record of elevating IT at the most senior levels in an organization and partnering as a trusted advisor to the business.
• Demonstrated experience translating and presenting highly technical solutions to business leaders to gain understanding and conceptualize business value.
• Depth of application experience supporting large, complex, high transaction rate and geographically diverse locations .
• Exceptional depth of process, methodology and procedure experience. In depth knowledge and demonstrated experience designing and owning large scale, OLTP and Data Warehouse applications.
• Comprehensive knowledge of hardware, software, application, systems and engineering.
• Extensive knowledge of IT governance, operations, security practices, and audit compliance.
• In depth knowledge and demonstrated experience developing web and mobility applications.
• Strong experience with any (several) of the following tools and development environments (i.e. Big Data and large scale architectures): Hadoop, MongoDB, Riak, HANA, or Exadata.
• Proven ability to proactively communicate status (positive or negative) and identify risks.
• Has led teams of 50+ or more technology professionals.
• Proven track record directing complex projects with enterprise-wide impact on revenue and expenses.
• Vendor and consulting management experience. Experience in evaluating and selecting sourcing alternatives.
Preferred:
• Data analytics and correlation experience preferred.
• Prior experience in Energy & Utilities preferred but not mandatory. Experience in other regulated industries would be a plus.
• Experience with ERP, SAP.
• Understanding of Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) extremely attractive.
• NERC CIP knowledge preferred but not mandatory.
