Director, Portfolio Management at Novartis Consumer Health


Job Description

Owner of the OTC BU portfolio – both innovation and maintenance of business (MoB) - accountable to drive prioritization and management processes, analyse portfolio to inform leadership discussions to achieve optimal portfolio balance, maintain portfolio/project data, and communicate portfolio changes to key stakeholders across the organization.

Drive portfolio strategic prioritization processes – both innovation and MoB:
Define and communicate timeline/milestones for upcoming portfolio prioritization
Update information for existing projects and collect information for newly proposed projects
Develop initial prioritization of portfolio based on input from priority OTC markets
Analyse portfolio mix and develop recommendations to balance portfolio to ensure alignment with organization’s strategic goals, eg long-term vs. short-term projects, risk vs. reward, class of innovation, geographical & category coverage
Prepare meeting materials for initial portfolio recommendations to present to “Portfolio Management Committee” (PMC)
Prepare materials for final PMC recommendation to GLT and document outcomes from GLT review
Communicate changes to the portfolio to key stakeholders
Lead portfolio management processes
Maintain portfolio dashboard for all active projects and update dashboard based on significant project changes
Assess impact of significant project changes on R&D resources and develop recommendations to PMC to shift resourcing
Collect market input on critical, time-sensitive projects requested between regular prioritization cycles and develop recommendations to shift resources for these projects
Develop materials for monthly PMC meetings to review changes to current projects and review recommendations for any resourcing changes for current or new projects
Communicate any interim changes to the portfolio to key stakeholders
Maintain portfolio and project data used for portfolio prioritization and management
Maintain a high-quality, consolidated database of critical project data
Develop tools, templates and guidelines for project managers & teams to provide project data needed for portfolio prioritization and management
Benchmark OTC portfolio prioritization and management processes against industry best practices to identify and champion appropriate opportunities for improvement
Skills

B.S./B.A. degree required, MS/MBA preferred
English, other EU languages are additional asset
7-10+ years previous work experience in global and/or cross-functional new product development teams or R&D portfolio management experience
Strong knowledge of OTC Portfolio/pipeline and OTC’s commercial strategy and understanding of competitive environment
Excellent analytical, problem solving, planning and organisation skills
Sound financial modeling and project management capabilities (e.g., multi-tasking, prioritization)
Strong leadership skills needed to drive adherence to new portfolio prioritization and management processes
Strategic thinking to assess implications on global projects, resource management and decisions in support of R&D
Ability to influence others, collaborate across functions and geographies and work closely with senior leadership teams
