The Position
A Global View: The Metabolic DTARoche's Metabolic Disease Translational Area (DTA) oversees the discovery, research and development (to medical proof of concept) of novel treatments for diseases of the metabolism, such as diabetes, cardiovascular, dyslipidemia and renal. Roche aims to be amongst the main players in metabolism with a focus portfolio that combines first-and/or best-in class products, having 3 programs in Phase III, and 6 programs in Phase I/II. Key elements for success are speed to the market, differentiation and commercial execution. The emphasis will be on innovative Research and Development combined with functional excellence. This will require efficiently identifying and developing innovative leads through scientific excellence as well pursuing external opportunities on innovative areas that complement, reinforce and advance our internal portfolio.
The Research Leader ( Group Leader ) will lead a group of scientists dedicated to innovative drug discovery research in Metabolic area (Diabetes; Renal ; Dyslipidemia/Atherosclerosis) The candidate will be responsible for championing new ideas and concepts , leading their implementation throughout the value chain and ensuring the management of research studies aimed at novel and differentiated pharmaceutical products. He /She will also lead the profiling and differentiation studies for advanced programs (Phase I to Ph III). The Group Leader will assist the Section Head in directing drug discovery research for the Metabolic Disease Area, particularly in a) closely working with colleagues across the global discovery and development organization to ensure integrated implementation of the global research strategy, b) interfacing with translational medicine leaders and biomarkers scientists to design translational studies for proof of concept in man, and c) elaborating the overall short and long term strategies for the discovery organization.

The ideal candidate will be a PhD. and/or MD biologist, physiologist or pharmacologist , with ten years experience in Metabolic Diseases and a demonstrated scientific authority, supported by a relevant publication record. Preference will be given to a successful track record in Diabetes with relevant exposure in Dyslipidemia/Atherosclerosis or Renal. Experience and success in establishing and leading cross-functional teams and research projects is essential (academic and/or Pharma). Exposure to moving research into clinical development and/or in establishing translational studies would be an advantage.The position requires excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to meaningfully interact with others in a dynamic and highly team-oriented/matrix environment. This position will be located in Nutley, NJ.
