Job Description
The role of this position is to lead & manage a regional External R&D group in its mission to identify, evaluate and develop ongoing
relationships with external organizations developing innovative vaccine candidates, new technologies and / or scientific advances relevant
to vaccine development. The major expected results are well organized and communicated scientific evaluation reports supporting the advancement
of new partnerships to enrich the Sanofi Pasteur pre-clinical portfolio, clinical pipeline and science & technology projects in terms of
quantity and quality. External R&D provides key input affecting the development of R&D strategy and the progress of portfolio projects on a
global basis. The incumbent will actively interact with internal Sanofi Group colleagues (Pharma, Genzyme, Merial) to collaborate and support
joint evaluation efforts, academic innovation programs, investment opportunities and regional Hub activities (Asia Pacific, Boston, and French
Hubs) as required.
Job Responsibilities
Lead and Manage the External R&D unit based in Cambridge.
Train and mentor the department staff to effectively triage the identification, evaluation, and archival of information from external
vaccine candidate and vaccine related technology opportunities
Coordinate and oversee the evaluation process performed by department members and continuously develop and improve the organization
Prioritize the evaluation of lead opportunities (as defined by New Target Group, Pipeline Strategy Committee and New Vaccine Advancement
Committee) to ensure continuous in-flow of quality innovation balanced by active follow up on reactive external scientific opportunities
Expedite evaluations and provide timely feedback and responses to prospective partners; clearly communicate and coordinate activities across
the R&D functions
Fiscal responsibility (cost center budget planning and financial management)
Organize monthly activity report with other regional External R&D heads for senior management review and comment
Personnel development and long range planning
Effectively manage a small team of scientists and an administrative assistant to achieve priority objectives
Show broad and strong leadership
Participate as a permanent member of senior management committees (External Innovation Executive Committee, Global Leader Network, Site
specific operations committees, etc.)
Contribute as a member to Task Forces and Strategic Work Stream Committees (e.g. R&D China Strategy, Flu Summit, New Pertussis Work Group,
New Target Group, Adjuvant Task Force, Academic Steering Committee, Knowledge & Innovation for Technology Excellence, New Vaccine Advancement
Committee, Sanofi Therapeutic Strategic Unit liaison) working with colleagues from Commercial Operations, Industrial Operations, Legal,
Corporate Development and other cross functional groups
Present identified high impact opportunities for External Innovations Executive Committee review and consideration
Participate as an Expert in R&D Project Reviews, expert panels and similar groups
Provide a clear alignment and integration of our internal needs and strategic vision with the rapidly evolving external technological landscape
Maintain a clear awareness of internal needs and strategic vision
Critically analyze emerging opportunities for potential alignment with internal needs and strategies
Annual ecosystem mapping to identify and anticipate potential evolutions in the external environment
Proactively scan the external environment to identify and evaluate scientific and technological developments relevant to the business of
Sanofi Pasteur
Identify emerging opportunities for potential alignment with strategies and addressing internal needs and gaps
Develop information exchanges with biotechnology companies, pharmaceutical groups, academic institutions, government agencies and other
groups as appropriate
Maintain a network of experts in the relevant scientific fields
Maintain a current knowledge of key areas of scientific literature
Initiate contact with a broad spectrum of external organizations and potential enabling partners
Provide a critical scientific and technical analysis of the work of potential partners to serve as a basis for decision making by sanofi pasteur management
Assess the scientific, medical and technical contributions of the partner to the strategy
Evaluate the scientific and technical risks related to the partner’s activities
Identify , if necessary, internal teams to assess the scientific and technical aspects of potential collaborations
Prepare reports and other documentation as appropriate and maintain the database of business records
Represent Sanofi Pasteur to the outside world
Invited speaker, delegate or session chair at scientific and business partnering conferences, congresses, symposia and similar events
Collaborate with Sanofi Scouting and Innovation (Asia Pacific Therapeutic Strategic Unit, Cambridge, Paris)
Work closely with Corporate Development and Legal Affairs to support business negotiations with potential partners
Provide scientific and technical input to support constructive negotiations, accurate deal evaluation, and the choice of an appropriate deal structure
Assemble internal teams (internal champion) to evaluate external opportunities and to develop work plans, as necessary, prior to executing research collaborations and licensing agreements
Lead and contribute to Due Diligence activities in support of Corporate Development licensing negotiations as required by the External Innovations Executive Committee
Provide both short and intermediate term scientific and technical support to the existing R&D Project Teams
Provide a critical analysis of external opportunities relative to the goals of the projects
Coordinate evaluations and foster regular interactions with Sanofi teams (Pharma, Genzyme, Merial)
Exchange information on evaluation of opportunities and innovations with applications that may benefit Sanofi business needs
Collaborate and support joint evaluations, due diligence activities, strategic forums, academic innovation programs, investment
opportunities and regional Hub activities (Boston)
Requirements
MD and/or Ph.D. in a relevant scientific discipline (microbiology, virology, immunology) with 10-15 years’ post-doctoral experience
in the biotechnology or pharmaceutical industryExcellent written and oral communication skills
Proven ability to communicate with multiple departments and functions within an organization
Demonstrated leadership and management skills
Up to 50% of domestic and international travel
Experience in the vaccine industry is strongly preferred
The individual must demonstrate solid experience providing vision of new technologies, industry landscape and its constant evolution
