Director Device Engineering Vocera San Francisco

Job Description
The Director, Device Engineering will lead of team of high caliber, seasoned hardware, RF, firmware, mechanical, audio/DSP and acoustics developers. This individual is ultimately responsible for the design and development of the wearable device product line, and will ensure the product continues to sustain our customer needs.
The individual will collaborate with internal Vocera teams, including: Product Management to gather requirements; Technical Support during and after product launch to ensure that the field issues are addressed in future releases;
Operations during the development of the product and transfer of the design to the contract manufacturer; Executive Management on project and resource planning, execution and management of timelines and budgets; and finally, Engineering cohorts to ensure innovation and creativity are not compromised.

Responsibilities

Manage the delivery of a high performance, embedded, real time, wearable, two-way communication device for low-power, lightweight use in healthcare and other settings
Staff and mentor a team of senior digital hardware design, RF, Audio/DSP, Mechanical, Linux kernel engineers, embedded application developers, and WLAN experts; coach and develop necessary skills by supporting individual growth needs
Build a team of collaborative, results-oriented, accountable engineers
Experience working with ODM/JDM's and other off-shore development facilities
Coordinate with cross-functional teams, including Product Management, Operations, QA, Release Engineering, and Support & Services to plan releases (features, bug fixes, schedule) and achieve release dates
Deliver to product schedules and manage risks and resources to achieve project goals.; support legacy products while simultaneously carrying out new product development
Manage outside resources such as test labs, consultants, or external contractors as required by project demands
Support Operations and Hardware with diagnostic and test firmware
Guide development of Vocera's embedded firmware including:
Coding, feature addition and bug fixing of WLAN supplicant and WLAN kernel device driver
Developing and debugging of advanced IEEE 802.11 security features
Developing additional wireless security features to support FIPS-140-2 certification
Design & implementation of applications that enhance existing performance of products

Competencies & Required Skills

Strong ability to build and nurture a high performance team
Proven skills to build and deliver highly integrated, small form-factor, consumer of enterprise grade handheld communication product
Ability to manage a cross-geography, cross-functional team that includes ODM's/JDM's as well as in-house design teams for a successful, on-time, on-budget, high volume product
Experience with multiple successful product deliveries from inception to sunset of a successful multi-year product life cycle
Must have mastery of one of the following technical domains: complex small form-factor embedded system, wired or wireless high speed communications, Digital Hardware & RF systems, multimedia systems (voice/speech, video)
Hands on experience with embedded processors, and bringing up embedded platform; familiarity with ARM based designs and Android platforms is a huge plus
Guide teams towards decision making in presence of (sometimes) incomplete information using fact-based, data driven methodologies and good influencing skills
Professional oral and written communication skill; a good listener
Deep understanding of Agile software methodology
A highly motivated self-starter and team player
Requirements

BS or MS in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience
15+ years of experience in the high technology industry (handheld communications, networking, consumer electronics, SAN, STB)
10+ years managing teams of 8-30 engineers
Demonstrable history of leadership in wearable, IoT product development in wireless, networking, communications, or multimedia space
Experience working with off-shore development facilities and contract manufacturing is very desirable
Strong preference for someone who has led a successful product design from inception to launch
