This position will provide leadership on policy development, analysis, advocacy, and strategic planning to Duke Energy Corporation (DEC) and its businesses on significant public policy issues that may result in federal laws and regulations. The Director of Federal Governmental Affairs supports DEC and its executives to carry out its business and strategic goals by providing 1) lobbying services on legislative and regulatory matters, and 2) information, professional advice and problem-solving on governmental-related matters. Duties and Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to: Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with legislators and other federal officials to influence various legislative/regulatory actions Serves as principal interface with federal policy-makers Engages the CEO and company executives appropriately to advance goals Contacts and confers with members of Congress and other public officials to influence the approval, defeat, or amendment of legislation/regulation of interest to the Company in the conduct of its business

Remains abreast of trends and developments in the political climate and current legislative/regulatory developments affecting the Company Leverages consulting services appropriately Gathers, evaluates and disseminates timely information regarding government actions which may impact the Company and develops affective advocacy plans Monitors introduced legislation which may number 5000+ separate pieces during a typical congressional session Evaluates bills of interest to the Company and identifies policy issues, ie those affecting energy policy, labor laws, tax laws, environmental laws, and any other area of operation affected by Federal statute or regulation Assists the Company, through contact with executive and senior level officers, in developing, coordinating and implementing policies and positions that are favorable to the Company Identifies and engages associations/coalitions/third-party allies to support Duke Energy's positions Maintains contact with various professional and business organizations to develop leadership contacts and gain insight into the demands and pressures placed on legislators by their constituents Maintains excellent relations with Washington-based associations of which the Company is a member and other corporate offices to assure the flow of up-to-date, accurate information and coordination of industry and company priorities and positions Ensures the views of the Company are communicated directly and/or through trade associations and industry coalitions to policy makers throughout the decision-making process to favorably affect legislation/regulation that impacts the Company Keeps management informed on legislative/regulatory matters at the Federal level Informs management of the current political climate, provides advance notice of important legislative/regulatory changes, seeks management input on views, and keeps management informed on progress Enhances corporate image and promotes goodwill Maintains company reputation Develops strategic plans/processes to enhance company name, recognition and reputation in Washington Informs key policy makers of developments at Duke Energy,
