Director - Resource Development - Fundraising - Hostelling International USA - Washington


Job description
The Development Director is critical to the success of HI USA. We are seeking an energetic leader who will work in close collaboration with the Chief Marketing & Development Officer and the Chief Executive Officer to design and execute a comprehensive fund development strategy for HI USA. The Development Director will also be responsible for expanding the culture of philanthropy to all levels of the organization.

The Development Director will work with the senior leadership team to identify contributed funding needs, preferred funding targets, and best approaches. This person will grow the organization’s resource activities by establishing a strategy and structure for effective ongoing fund development, and provide overall leadership to ensure optimal results. Key responsibilities in this role will include creating, nurturing, and stewarding a portfolio of ongoing relationships with current donors and major giving prospects, while also growing HI USA’s base of support among individuals, charitable foundations, corporations, and other partners.


The ideal candidate for this position is an experienced fundraising professional with a proven track record of success in coordinating and executing strategic long-term fundraising goals. This person is able to set a bold vision, develop strategies and operating plans, and execute actions to attain results. This individual must have an entrepreneurial spirit and possess a high level of personal responsibility for achieving ambitious outcomes in a dynamic environment. This position will have high visibility at all levels of the organization, including our hostels, the Central Office, and the Board of Directors.

Responsibilities:
Research, prospect, and apply to multiple donor sources.
Develop and write grant proposals for major national initiatives and assist with other regional proposals as needed.
Plan and execute capital campaigns and ongoing annual fundraising efforts, including planned and major gifts.
Assess the organization’s fundraising performance against the annual budget and annual work plan, as well as the organization’s long-term strategic plan.
Stay current with industry ethics and best practices in resource development and ensure organization-wide implementation of those standards.
Participate in marketing branding efforts to ensure strategy and messaging alignment.
Create and maintain ongoing relationships with donors and major giving prospects.
Perform other related duties as assigned.

Desired Skills and Experience
Passion for the mission of Hostelling International USA
Bachelor’s Degree required
Results oriented with 5+ years in non-profit leadership with experience in fund development
CFRE certification preferred
Knowledge of and ability to adapt best practices to facilitate development goals
Strong relationship building and personal solicitation skills required
Strong project management skills to facilitate planning, leading and managing development projects, and tracking and reporting on progress to senior management and the Board of Directors
Excellent organizational and project management skills with good attention to detail
Highly persuasive with a genuine demeanor and exceptional written/verbal communication skills essential
