Director - Human Resources Operations - Lafarge - Chicago
Job description
The Director, Human Resources works closely with the Vice President, Human Resources to define and develop the HR strategy for the $1.2 billion US business. Additionally, he/she works as a business partner with the business management team in the development of business plans and strategy. The incumbent will identify key HR issues as well as develop action plans to support business objectives. The successful placement will have full responsibility for leading the HR, Labor and Employee Relations function for Lafarge. As a member of the senior human resources leadership team they will play a critical, strategic and highly involved role. At a high level, he/she will be responsible for developing labor strategies, providing leadership and management for the manufacturing HR team. This individual will be responsible for 3,000 manufacturing employees across 150 plants in the US with the plant HR oversight. This individual will bring a level of strategy, leadership, expertise and knowledge with the following expectations:
Promotes a culture of safety and exhibits such behaviors.
Formulate the labor strategy supporting company needs.
Serve as lead negotiator in collective bargaining.
Coordinate grievance and arbitration procedures.
Develop and maintain progressive relationships with Union leadership via strong communication processes and initiatives; utilizing the relationship building process as part of the overall development and implementation of a strong labor relations strategy.
Advise and collaborate with managers on all aspects of personnel policy including wages, benefits, pensions, and work practices.
Manage investigations of hot line complaints.
Manage the manufacturing HR team.
Desired Skills and Experience
Required Experience:
Bachelor's degree in HR or Business. Graduate level degree preferred.
Minimum 10 years progressive HR experience within an industrial manfuacturing environment. Must have demonstrated leadership experience, as well as exposure to OD/OE. Qualifications could be a combination of an HR/operational background.
Supports both the business and HR discipline’s objectives through implementation of HR strategy to assure appropriate employee resources are available to achieve planned results. Works with management to identify organizational issues that impact the attainment of business objectives.
Experience in all aspects of human resources, employee relations, company/union relations and employment law.
Lead negotiations on large union contracts and have successfully defeated an organization challenge.
Experience in managing a grievance and arbitration process, including arguing arbitration cases.
Coordinates performance management activities for the field, including the O&HR, IDP, performance appraisal, bonus, and merit processes.
Assists the management staff in addressing performance issues in key positions and provides consultative support as required.
Engages management team in actively managing and developing future talent.
Collaborates with Director of Talent on employee development requirements including identify training & development opportunities and resources required for targeted employee populations.
Oversees implementation of Corporate Human Resources programs and policies for the business.
Actively engages in communications with other HR staff around best practices and identifies opportunities to create consistency where necessary.
Drives diversity & inclusion in the operations.
Experience in managing and directing the activities of a labor relations and/or human resources organization using metrics and analytics to drive results.
Excellent business acumen.
Strong cultural/international sensitivity.
