Director - Engineering - Freewire Broadband - Portland
Job description
Freewire Broadband is a regional Internet and Data Services provider for businesses. We’re in need of a Director of Engineering to lead our engineering and support teams in a direction that is in line with Freewire’s long term growth plan. In this position you’ll have the opportunity and responsibility to oversee all technical functions in the company and as a core member, have an impact on the growth and direction of the company.
Position Summary
Responsibilities and tasks include:
• Collaborate with the NOC manager and ensure effective network monitoring, operations, support, and troubleshooting.
• Oversee NOC efforts during major issues and projects, acting as an escalation resource for communication or other needs.
• Manage resources and execution for the technical aspects of customer projects, including engineering teams, equipment selection, project planning, test plan development, and troubleshooting.
• Be the senior customer-facing technical representative, both in high-sensitivity support situations, and in project sales meetings.
• Manage internal technical projects, including: site acquisition planning, software development, network upgrades, and security audits.
• Plan and oversee service and equipment R&D
• Provide leadership and vision both to the technical teams and the rest of the company, cultivating a strong culture of innovation, excellence, and service.
• Perform budgeting, capacity planning, and risk management.
• Foster effective communication between teams and team members.
• Ensure thorough and accurate documentation systems and processes.
• Manage relationships with vendors and partners
• Orchestrate team growth, hiring team members, managing training, and performing regular performance reviews.

• Previous experience in a technical management and leadership role

• Self-starter approach to tasks and learning
• Strong technical aptitude and a desire to learn
• Ability to incrementally troubleshoot problems
• Thorough and current understanding of networking basics, including: Ethernet, TCP/IP, IP routing, and Firewalling
• Knowledge of advanced networking concepts and systems, such as: OSPF, BGP, MPLS, Microwave RF systems, VPNs, DC Power Systems, and Wireshark packet capturing.
• Knowledge of enterprise/carrier router and switch configuration, such as: Brocade, Cisco, or Juniper
• Basic knowledge of Linux
