Job Description
General Summary:
Direct all aspects of software development at Sonos, leading a team of technical managers and engineers to implement and refine a world-class software engineering process.
Responsibilities:
Lead the entire Sonos software development team, from device drivers and networking to audio reproduction and user interfaces. Direct several teams working on parallel branches of development to deliver excellent software on a variety of platforms and timelines.
Organize, grow, and evolve the software organization as necessary to meet a rapidly increasing demand for more software products, delivered in parallel. Hire managers to lead software functional areas, working closely with HR and recruiters to create compelling job descriptions and identify candidates. Mentor managers in best practices for motivating and organizing their teams, preparing schedules, reporting status, and hiring. Set the hiring bar for software managers and individual contributors.
Anticipate and react to the evolving needs of the software development organization: maintain an up-to-date resource and hiring plan that ensures all software development sub-disciplines are fully staffed and well-managed in an environment of rapid growth and frequent releases spanning multiple platforms.
Nurture a software engineering culture that emphasizes predictable ship dates, exceptionally low defect rates in code delivered to QA and customers, and exceptionally high productivity and career satisfaction amongst team members.
Ensure proper attention is given to preserving a clean and sustainable software architecture. Encourage technical managers to adopt solid designs for long-term maintainability of the code bases they oversee, ease of implementing anticipated future features, portability to multiple platforms, and avoidance of bugs.
Architect the software development life cycle and process, including project phases, milestones, alpha and beta, maintenance releases, integration points with hardware releases, branching and merging strategy across multiple lines of development, etc.
Contribute to the code design by acting as a sounding board for the development team as they determine the best ways to implement the product’s desired feature set, and what technologies to use.
Conduct 1:1 meetings and performance reviews. Provide specific feedback to help managers improve their work. Participate in interviewing and make final hiring decisions.
Interface with the QA group to ensure that their requirements for code testability are met and to prioritize their requests. Interface with the hardware group to manage interdependencies between hardware and software releases. Interface with the customer service and support organization to continuously improve the customer experience and lower support costs. Interface with the interaction design group to ensure a usable and attractive user interface.
Qualifications:
A track record of success leading software development organizations that deliver multiple complex software products in parallel on multiple branches of development.
Experience leading both “low-level” (operating systems, device drivers, DSP) and “high-level” (client-server, application software with user interfaces) software development teams, with enough technical depth in these areas to hire managers, drill into project status, and keep engineers “honest”.
Proven ability to rapidly hire, onboard, and mentor excellent software engineering managers.
Recent experience leading a team delivering commercial, end-user oriented software (embedded, shrink wrap, or released to the web).
Familiarity with the C/C++ programming language.
Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, or related discipline.
Ten years of software engineering experience, including experience hiring and managing technical leads or managers.
