The Industrial Design team in Google’s Hardware organization is looking for an experienced Head of Model Shop to coordinate the build-out, management and future development of a new Model Shop focused on fabricating high-quality prototypes and appearance models for consumer electronics products -- with extremely short lead times.
You will need to personify the expertise and professionalism necessary to gain confidence and build lasting strategic relationships with the various management and individual contributors of our hardware design partners (e.g. ID, Engineering, Operations, Marketing) -- as well as external work partners/suppliers. You will have the planning and collaboration skills to help define a vision and direction for the Model Shop across the hardware organization, in order to cultivate and maintain an inspired culture of creativity, innovation, loyalty, performance and accountability.

Responsibilities
Coordinate Model Shop activities and resources effectively to consistently deliver projects within budget, and according to the quality and timelines demanded by Google Hardware Design. Identify, attract, develop and retain professional, creative, and motivated model shop team members
Work directly with internal work partners to set/manage priorities and expectations, workflow and navigate through issues and roadblocks. Achieve deliverables involves project management and vendor management experience. Multitask, manage fabrication requests and route to vendors as needed
Leverage prototype management experience to identify, deploy and maintain the latest in cutting-edge equipment
Promote effective cross-functional teamwork between design, product development, product management, manufacturing and operations
Possess excellent program management skills and the ability to organize and manage large complex projects and balance. Set and implement short and long range technology strategies in concert with business profitability and growth objectives multiple priorities
Qualifications
Minimum qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Industrial Design or equivalent practical experience.
15 years of prototyping and product development experience.
Experience in leading, managing and motivating people.
Experience in manufacturing strategies, processes and technologies. Technical experience, including working experience in mechanical engineering, manufacturing and industrial design.
Preferred qualifications:
Strong experience and knowledge of the full spectrum of model and prototype development -- e.g. 3D printing, CNC surface evaluation models, functional prototypes, full appearance model (with aesthetic finishes matching production-level appearance)
Experience working extensively in the model making and prototyping business in support of the design and development of consumer products -- and participating in the development of products from inception to production
Experience recruiting, training, developing and retaining a talented staff in model making and prototype development. Experience utilizing and proposing state-of-the-art prototyping equipment and fabrication processes
Demonstrated experience in successfully engaging customers in the strategic planning of their product development initiative relative to providing sound model and prototype strategies to achieve their design intent
Demonstrating sound business management and strong technical acumen.
Thrives in chaos, obsessed with customer experience, fanatic about the details, scrappy and willing to wear multiple hats, will do what it takes to get the job done.
