Director Compliance Program Unum Portland

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Develop and oversee the implementation of compliance programs and resources to ensure that the execution of corporate strategies, initiatives and projects comply with applicable insurance laws and regulations. Monitor industry and regulatory environment and make changes required to compliance programs to preemptively avoid/minimize regulatory risks.

Partner with management and staff in all areas of the organization to strategically implement and sustain compliance with regulatory requirements.
Develops and employs compliance audit protocols, monitoring tools and other approaches to assess the effectiveness of the company’s compliance program.
Design risk analysis tools and protocols for use in: (a) annual/on-going compliance program planning, and (b) assessing business risks in the execution of compliance projects.
Determine information system needs, automated tools, etc. required to execute the compliance program.
Oversees various compliance functions including the advertising review processes, and ongoing assessment of the company’s business practices, policies and procedures.
Partner cross-enterprise to ensure that critical regulatory risk are effectively managed through the orderly implementation of new laws and regulations, regulatory corrective actions and the protection of sensitive customer information.
Collaborate across the enterprise to promote alignment of compliance positions and to ensure efficient use of shared compliance-related services.
Represent the company regarding compliance matters dealing with third party organizations, e.g., TPA’s, reinsurers, brokers, enrollers, etc.
Manage and train compliance staff and covers for AVP as needed.
Direct a technical and professional staff in support of implementation of compliance programs, including internal control design, employing appropriate manual or automated solutions relative to the risk at hand
Coordinate with key business partners to ensure that corporate strategies, initiatives and projects are timely & effectively implemented.
Provide management consultation as requested for sensitive or special circumstances.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Job Specifications
Minimum 10 years of insurance industry regulatory experience in compliance, risk management or corporate audit roles.
Strong/proven knowledge of business processes and structure within an insurance environment.
Ability to manage complex projects contemporaneously.
Strong technical proficiency and knowledge of information systems.
Demonstrated team building, coaching, mentoring skills and leadership skills.
Strong problem solving, program and project management skills.
Comprehensive knowledge of Unum’s functional operations & inter-dependencies between/among business areas, as well as the computer systems and technical platforms employed to administered Unum’s business activities and regulatory reporting.
Proven ability to understand and strategically apply insurance regulation to company processes, procedures or systems in support of corporate business objectives.
Superior oral and written communication skills and negotiation skills.
Strategic understanding of the insurance marketplace.
Understanding of quality control and testing for insurance-related systems.
Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent.
Managerial experience preferred.
Excellent communications skills and abilities working with all corporate levels including senior management and external contacts. Strong planning, conflict resolution, organizational and partnering skills.
