Director - Engineering - Gentex - Scranton


Job description
Gentex Corporation, an internationally recognized leader in the manufacture of sophisticated life support systems, has an immediate opening for a Director of Engineering based at its Corporate Headquarters in the Greater Scranton, Pennsylvania area.
This position is responsible for the effective leadership, and management of the Engineering function, and organizational structure designed to meet annual Enterprise goals in accordance with all related plans and policies. The incumbent will establish the direction of our manufacturing engineering organization, and must be passionate about Team development.

Education Requirements:
The successful candidate must possess a B.S. degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering and have a minimum of 7 years organizational Engineering Management with at least 5 years experience in an engineering Leadership role. In addition the incumbent will have completed advanced professional courses in product development, project planning, estimating, budgeting, scheduling, personnel management, and risk reduction.


Experience Required;
Working within an integrated product development team environment
Systems engineering, program/project planning, work scope estimating, technical project management and budgeting
Key skill set identification, selection and management, and multiple concurrent task/resource scheduling
Executing a disciplined approach to design and development practices
Demonstrated problem solving skills
Managing multiple concurrent tasks and scheduling of resources
Experience Preferred:
Experience in systems engineering and technical project management
Defense or Aerospace industry, Lean Manufacturing and 6σ knowledge and experience

Determines and manages departmental budget and tracks annual activities

Effectively communicates and executes critical thinking evaluation of approaches to problems, projects and programs
Deploys and/or delegates project management and task execution priorities to direct staff with regular monitoring oversight, alignment and corrective adjustments as necessary
Regularly uses pre-and-post-project feedback techniques to foster continuous improvement
Establishes and sustains the effective communication and review of metrics and holds staff accountable for executing assigned tasks
Implements and sustains collaborative team dynamics within the engineering department and with other company functions

Primary Responsibilities as the Department Leader:
Effectively leads the local Engineering department staff and supports other location Engineering departments
Executes approved task plans, and assess talent and equipment resource availability, budgets, and schedules
Performs essential activities, in collaboration with other company functions and businesses, to significantly reduce the Engineering department’s task execution activities as a primary constraint to company growth
Collaborates effectively with other functional groups to meet annual Enterprise goals that are impacted by the Engineering department execution of its roles and responsibilities
Defines, models, monitors and maintains professional interpersonal behaviors between staff and other departments and between Engineering staff and customers, partners and suppliers

Essential Functions:
Serves as the lead in the critical evaluation of project/program estimates for a technical approach to meeting requirements
Implements, monitors, mentors and reinforces the discipline of Systems Engineering and Integration, Quality System Standards (AS and/or ISO) and procedures for design reviews, milestone criteria inputs/outputs, and new product development stages and gates
Ensures product, contractual and investment performance expectations are met
Serves as a mentor and ensures career path reviews occur on regular basis via one-on-one performance feedback, and with Human Resources as necessary
Implements and sustains a culture of continuous improvement in analyzing engineering department operations and infrastructure with specific objectives and targeted metrics
Tracks metrics progress, and reports results
Represent company as their technical lead authority with customers, partners and suppliers as necessary
Responsible for meeting engineering and other Company needs, including timelines for departmental budgets, personnel performance evaluations, financial inputs and reviews, and periodic business meetings.
Holds regular internal staff meetings to communicate activities and obtain feedback
Communicate regularly with engineering management peers at other locations
