Director Memory Strategy Sensing Samsung Electronics San Jose

Job Description:
We are looking for passionate and talented people to join our Memory Sensing and Strategy (MSS) efforts in our Product Planning operation in San Jose CA. MSS is tackling a variety of memory and storage challenges in Enterprise and Cloud Computing as well as Big Data Systems. Operating like a start-up under the Samsung umbrella, the vision of MSS is to be the engine of state-of-the-art memory technology sensing/pathfinding and innovation for Samsung Semiconductor.

The MSS team needs you to leverage your system knowledge and industry connections in the memory/storage ecosystem, and work with local customers/partners, R&D team in our Memory Solutions Lab (MSL), Memory Product Planning team to manage and guide the R&D portfolio and memory product roadmap for Samsung. It also includes collaboration with our Sales & Marketing teams to bring technologies to market.

As a team member, you will play a key role in shaping a new and growing organization to address the next generation of world leading memory and storage solutions molding our product strategy and roadmaps to meet customer requirements. You must be technically capable and have sufficient business acumen to help direct R&D resources identify high return on investment research topics based on understanding market environment and trends.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Strategy: A key role of this position is to work with key architects and R&D project leads to develop a state-of-the-art roadmap for enterprise and data center memory and storage solutions. This involves collaborating internally and with external customers and partners to map core R&D technology to high-value solutions that address real world markets and applications.

Sensing: You will also engage in self-driven research to maintain an early awareness of new market and technology developments in this domain. You will be the first to identify and analyze relevant new developments in the industry from start-ups, competitors, university research, and your own rolodex of industry connections. The output of this activity is to understand important industry trends and distinguish key players and technologies that have strategic importance to Samsung’s memory business and to prioritize and engage. This could include activities from technical collaboration to investment to M&A assessment and recommendation.

Eco-Enabling, Business Development and Go To Market Strategies: This is the ultimate outcome of the Strategy and Sensing activities and as an MSS team member you will be expected to take R&D projects through a technology life cycle process. This involves a “start, stop, continue” technology gating evaluation of R&D projects and activities as well as eco-enabling (via consortia or standards organizations) for these technologies when needed. It also entails developing business development and go-to-market plans for those R&D projects that prove valuable enough to make it through the technology pipeline gating process and working with Product Planning and Sales & Marketing teams to realize revenue for Samsung’s Memory Business.

Desired Skills and Experience
Required:

Highly motivated and self-driven
B.S. in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering and at least 10 years of industry experience.
General domain knowledge of memory and/or storage subsystem architecture
Experience in business development, go to market strategies and product/project planning
Desired:

Excellent communication and presentation skills
Recent working knowledge of data center storage systems
Understanding of big data applications, such as relational databases (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, SQL Server), NoSQL databases (e.g., HBase, CouchDB, MongoDB, Redis, Cassandra, DynamoDB, etc), and memcached
