Working under general direction of the Chief of Government Relations, the Director of Strategic Initiatives & Engagement is a member of the senior team of the Government Relation Office (GRO), and contributes to its strategic direction. The Director provides senior-level managerial expertise and strategic advice to the Chief of Government Relations. They will ensure development and implementation of strategic initiatives related to the University’s external and community relations in alignment with the U of T’s mission.
The Director, Strategic Initiatives and Engagement proactively cultivates and manages the University’s non-governmental external relations and partnerships including relationships with community partners, and third party agencies to promote the agenda and priories of the University. The Director effectively manage human resources and financial administration of the Strategic Initiatives and Engagement team in the GRO, including human resources and financial administration,

Key responsibilities include: developing and implementing strategy and managing strategic partnerships; identifying key issues that affect the university and its external partners; advising and recommending solutions on strategy options; implementing and managing project plans to support the key objectives and priorities of the Government, Institutional, and Community Relations (GICR) portfolio of the University.

The Director works closely with the senior leaders at the University (e.g., Chief of Government Relations, various Vice-Presidents, Associate, Assistant Vice-Presidents, Deans and Principals and other senior university administrators) to provide a high level of strategic advice on specific issues. They will initiate and undertake detailed research on a wide variety of issues and topics; follow-up on and implementing decisions made by the Chief of Government Relations; manage external stakeholder relations on behalf of the Chief of Government Relations; and direct sponsorship, partnership, and external community engagements. The Director will always ensure the highest level of proactivity and service for the portfolio to members both inside and outside of the University community.


Qualifications:
(MINIMUM)

I. EDUCATION:

Graduate degree in public policy, economics, political science, or appropriate combination of education and experience.

II. EXPERIENCE:

Minimum four (4) years related experience in progressively senior positions in government or the non-government sector. Experience in, or an in depth understanding of, the post-secondary sector. Extensive experience with stakeholder engagement and management. Knowledge about media, protocol, diplomacy and an excellent understanding of the University’s mission and intersection with the broader community.

III. SKILLS:

Advanced computer skills in Microsoft Office, Internet, Acrobat, and scheduling software.

IV. OTHER:

The incumbent will demonstrate:

• High degree of political acuity and judgment; ability to deal with senior University Officers and external stakeholders, in a manner which facilitates cooperation and consensus building;
