Design Director Mapbox San Francisco

Job Description: • 2-minute read •
As Design Director at Mapbox you'll take care of our design team. Together with our product, marketing, and engineering teams, you'll set goals for design at Mapbox. You're a mentor for our design team and everyone within Mapbox who wants to learn more about design. You coach your team in solving complex design challenges and challenge them to improve our products and grow their skills. Above all, you want to get your hands dirty and lead by example.

You'll create room for creativity, are comfortable with pressure, know how to prioritize and get things done. Together with our design and communications team, you'll shape our identity. You'll work with our product teams to improve our tools and drive adoption. You understand that design is much more than pixels and ink. You balance vision, strategy, and everyday execution.
What You’ll Do
You translate the talent in your team and your own skills and experience into a strong design vision. Everything we share should feel great, look great, and immediately make sense to our target audiences.
You advocate for design across the company, making sure that design is not just an afterthought but core to our product development process
You take care of our talented design team and help them improve their skills and set priorities. You are their partner, whether they're working on product, communications, visual, or research, working with them on career-pathing and helping them ship great work and achieve their goals.
You have regular 1-on-1s with your team members and organize and lead design critiques & design sprints.
You work with our product & marketing teams to prioritize, execute, and deliver on a dozen projects simultaneously, and establish design processes to ensure we’re coordinated and providing a thoughtful user experience
Scale the design team and develop an organizational structure that balances the benefits of central coordination and decentralized embedding with product teams
What We Believe Are Important Traits for This Role
Strong Communications. You can communicate complex ideas concisely to a wide audience. Similarly, you can explain your work in detail and walk through design decisions with teammates and collaborators.
Creativity. You have a track record of brainstorming creative ideas to tackle complex problems and are constantly learning from past successes and failures.
Empathy. You express ideas and feedback with grace, economy, and conviction. You’re not a robot.
Strong composition. You should understand balance and prioritization of elements visually and temporally. You should apply your experience in composition not only to your design work but also to how you write, prioritize tasks, and communicate with others.
Self-taught learner. You'll be surrounded by teammates with deep experience in strategy, data, code, and design, but we expect to be learning just as much from you.
Take risks and grow. This is going to be a difficult job. We’re looking for someone who understands that and is willing to take risks, fail, and come out stronger and try again.
